Problems solved by technology

Processes that utilize or generate hazardous chemicals pose particular problems, and often these process operations have to be operated under suboptimal conditions in order to minimize the risk of explosion or runaway reactions; this increases the operating costs (operating expenses or OPEX) of the plant. )
These processes may also have to utilize more equipment than is just needed to carry out the process; this will result in increased construction costs (capital expense or CAPEX)

Embodiment

[0060] In the 400,000mt / a ethylene oxide plant, the circulating gas flow to the reactor system is 600mt / h. This stream consists mainly of methane, ethylene, oxygen, argon, carbon dioxide and nitrogen. The temperature at the reactor inlet was 140°C and the pressure was 2000 kPa gauge. In FIG. 3 , ethylene oxide and carbon dioxide are produced on the catalyst inside reactor 1 . EO is scrubbed in EO absorber 2 and part of the cycle gas is scrubbed of carbon dioxide in carbon dioxide absorber 3 .

[0061] The absorbent used for carbon dioxide scrubbing is usually a circulating activated hot carbonate solution. Absorbent saturated with carbon dioxide from the bottom of absorber 3 is fed to the top of carbon dioxide stripper 4 via line 5 . The carbon dioxide is here discharged into the atmosphere as exhaust gas stream 7 . In this example, this carbon dioxide off-gas flow averaged 18 mt / h. The bottom stream 6 of the carbon dioxide stripper 4 is depleted in carbon dioxide and rec...

Abstract

The invention provides for the utilisation of microchannel apparatus in a process for removing combustible, volatile contaminants from a process stream which comprises heating the process stream to the combustion temperature of the volatile contaminant materials and combusting the materials to form a hot cleaned stream also containing combustion products. The hot cleaned stream is conducted through heat exchange channels which are in thermal contact with the first set of process microchannels. The cooled, cleaned stream is then recovered. The microchannels may contain a catalyst for catalytic oxidation. The treated process stream may be a C02 waste stream from an ethylene oxide production plant.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to improvements in the operation of processes, especially those involving hydrocarbons. The envisaged process improvement was found to be particularly suitable for the production of alkylene oxides from olefins and oxygen and their optional further conversion. Background technique [0002] When operating on an industrial scale, process operations must meet a number of important design criteria. In the modern environment, process design must take into account environmental regulations and maintain health and safety standards. Processes that utilize or generate hazardous chemicals pose particular problems, and often these process operations have to be operated under suboptimal conditions in order to minimize the risk of explosion or runaway reactions; this increases the operating costs (operating expenses or OPEX) of the plant. ). These processes may also have to utilize more equipment than is just needed to carry out the...
