A process for preparing water-retaining agent used for edible mushroom cultivation fungus sticks belongs to the field of agricultural materials. The water-retaining agent is formed by utilizing wax, resin and oil as main components and utilizing white carbon black and/or carbon black and the like as filling materials, and weight proportion of the water-retaining agent includes that the wax takes 15%-70%, the resin takes 10%-60%, the oil takes 1%-20% and the filling materials take 0.1%-5%. The oil and the wax in the ingredient perform congruent melting, the resin is added after the wax is completely melted basically, or the oil, the wax and the resin in the ingredient perform congruent melted at temperature of 100-120 DEG C, are added with the filling materials after the resin is melted completely and then is cooled and shaped to obtain the water-retaining agent. The water-retaining agent is nontoxic, can be safely used for cultivating food materials, is excellent in water-retaining property, and has fine water-retaining property which is more excellent than paraffin wax used as water-retaining agent by 30%-80%, and coating of the water-retaining agent in a melting state can be dried fast, thereby bringing convenience for farmers.
