Water repellent compositions for wood preservatives

Water-based wax emulsions, optionally for use in conjunction with alkaline copper and / or quaternary ammonium based preservatives systems, are described. These emulsions are comprised of natural or synthetic wax, nonionic surfactants having HL B values greater than 11, anionic surfactants, and water. Certain emulsion compositions as described in this specification posses the unique property of maintaining emulsion stability in wood preservatives during extended use in typical wood treatment processes. Water-repellant wood treated with the wax emulsions are described. A method of treating wood, comprising providing wood and treating the wood with the wax emulsion under conditions effective to increase its water repellency is also disclosed.

Novel wax emulsion coating applications

Waxes prepared from hydrogenated plant oils, such as castor, palm, and soybean, are used to prepare water based emulsions. The inventive waxes, obtained from naturally derived, renewable resources, were emulsified under anionic, cationic and nonionic conditions, producing emulsions having a solids content up to about 45% solids. When used to coat fibrous cellulosic articles, such as paperboard, the emulsions' performance was similar to emulsions containing petroleum-derived waxes. The inventive waxes have a low iodine value (between 2-5), and melting points between approximately 120-200 degrees F. (Mettler Drop Point). These waxes comprise a triglyceride whose fatty acids are predominantly stearic acid or ricinoleic acid. The inventive waxes are used as an alternative to petroleum-derived, or expensive naturally-occurring waxes in the manufacture of emulsions used in coatings, polishes, adhesives, paper products, paperboard and other manufacturing operations.

The invention further provides methods for making and using emulsions of such clay / wax nanocomposites. An ultraviolet light curing coating for a PVC floor is prepared from components in parts by weight as follows: 0-40 parts of prepolymers, 0-15 parts of fluorine-containing resin, 15-25 parts of a reactive diluent, 1-10 parts of a photoinitiator, 15-30 parts of filler, 1-5 parts of a wetting dispersant and 1-5 parts of a defoaming agent. The ultraviolet light curing coating for the PVC floor is high in curing speed, good in permeability and excellent in scratch resistance and pollution tolerance. The wear-resisting filler is added, so that a coating system has outstanding wear resistance and the wear resistance of the PVC floor is remarkably improved; the wear-resisting filler is one or more of ceramic powder, aluminum oxide, calcium carbonate, silica powder, corundum, diamonds, glass micropowder and macromolecule wax. Some fluorosilicon resin is also added to the coating to greatly reduce the surface tension of the coating, and the dirt resistance of the system can be significantly improved. The dispersity and the levelling performance of the coating system can be remarkably improved, bubbles of the coating can be notably reduced, and a coating layer with excellent performance can be obtained after curing.

Such emulsions may be added to hot, even boiling, water without the emulsion separating or curdling. Various embodiments are stable for extended periods of time when stored at room temperature, do not require the addition of a preservative biocide to avoid contributing to biodegradation in a lignocellulosic product. The emulsions are pourable liquids at room temperature. Optionally, the emulsions may be added to lignocellulosic products with a preservative to inhibit the preservative from leaching out.

Formulation for achievement of oil and grease resistance and release paper properties

A formulation, and a process for making same, is disclosed which is useful as a coating or treatment for imparting oil and grease resistance to an underlying substrate. The formulation does not contain any fluorochemicals. At the same time, however, the formulation provides oil and grease resistance properties that are equivalent to known coatings and treatments which contain fluorochemicals, particularly those coatings which are permitted to come into direct contact with food products. Therefore, the formulation of the present invention is ideal for use as a coating for paper and paperboard, including paper packaging such as that utilized in food wrappers, food containers, food receptacles and the like, and for other shaped articles. The formulation is also useful as a coating or treatment for providing release properties to an underlying substrate without the use of silicone. In addition, the present invention relates to the process for making the underlying substrate ideal for holdout of the release coating without excessive fiber refining, as in glassine papers. The formulation is a low solids coating that can be applied on the size press of a paper machine, eliminating the need for a post-machine coating process. The formulation does not include silicone, thereby allowing the release paper to be re-pulped. The wet end additive that provides sheet holdout combines with the release formulation to provide a release paper for pressure sensitive adhesives.

Dry-peelable temporary protective coatings

A dry-strippable coating composition can be incorporated into a composite article and comprises a dried water-borne polyurethane dispersion including a release additive comprising a releasing co-solvent or other selected release material. When water is removed from the polyurethane dispersion of the composite article and when the article comprises a thermoformable substrate, the article can be thermoformed to provide a shaped article. Dry-stripping the coating composition from the substrate provides a thermoformed substrate and a thermoformed protective layer. The dry-strippable coatings provide temporary protection for the surface of various products and components during manufacture, assembly, shipping, installation, painting, and refinishing operations.
