Embodiment 1

[0067] Example 1 : Add 50 mL of a mercury vapor feed formulation containing approximately 1,100 ppb Hg to multiple 100 mL glass tubes, then measure mercury levels using a LUMEX mercury analyzer equipped with a PYRO-915+. 50 mL of distilled water was placed in the tube and mercury levels were measured using a LUMEX mercury analyzer equipped with a PYRO-915+. Predetermined volumes of 3 different oxidizing agents (hydroperoxide (H 2 o 2 ), tert-butyl hydroperoxide and cumene hydroperoxide) were added to each reactor with a final oxidant concentration of 50 ppm. Stir the oil-water mixture for 1 minute. In the next step, different complexing reagents (potassium iodide (KI), sodium thiosulfate (Na 2 S 2 o 3 ), TETREN, and Na 4 EDTA) was added to each reactor so that the final concentrations were: 50,500 and 5,000ppm KI; 470 and 4,700ppm Na 2 S 2 o 3 ; 570 and 5,700ppm TETREN; 1,200 and 12,000ppm Na 4 EDTA. The tube was shaken vigorously for 1 minute. Aliquots of oil an...

Embodiment 2

[0071] Example 2 : Place 50 mL of distilled water into each of multiple 250 mL glass tubes and measure mercury levels using a LUMEX mercury analyzer equipped with a PYRO-915+. 50 mL of a mercury vapor feed formulation containing approximately 400 ppb Hg was added to each glass tube, and mercury levels were measured using a LUMEX mercury analyzer equipped with a PYRO-915+. A predetermined volume of hydrogen peroxide (0.3%H 2 o 2 ) stock solution with H 2 o 2A 246:1 molar ratio to Hg was added to each tube. The mixture was stirred at 600 rpm for 1 minute. In the next step, different complexing reagents (potassium iodide (KI), sodium thiosulfate (Na 2 S 2 o 3 ), TETREN, and Na 4 EDTA) was added to each tube at a molar ratio of complexing agent to mercury of 5,000:1. The tube was stirred at 600 rpm. Aliquots of oil and water from each tube were analyzed for mercury at 2, 5, 10, 15 and 30 minute intervals.

Abstract

Trace element levels of heavy metals such as mercury in crude oil are reduced by contacting the crude oil with an iodine source, generating a water soluble heavy metal complex for subsequent removal from the crude oil. In one embodiment, the iodine source is generated in-situ in an oxidation-reduction reaction, by adding the crude oil to an iodine species having a charge and a reductant or an oxidant depending on the charge of the iodine species. In one embodiment with an iodine species having a positive charge and a reducing reagent, a complexing agent is also added to the crude oil to extract the heavy metal complex into the water phase to form water soluble heavy metal complexes which can be separated from the crude oil, for a treated crude oil having reduced levels of heavy metals.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application requires the benefit of US Patent Application Serial Nos. 12 / 883,578; 12 / 883,971; and 12 / 883,995, all filed on September 16, 2010, in accordance with 35USC119. This application claims priority to and benefit from the aforementioned patent applications, the disclosures of which are incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0003] The present invention generally relates to processes, methods and systems for removing heavy metals, such as mercury, etc., from hydrocarbon fluids, such as crude oil. Background technique [0004] Trace amounts of heavy metals such as lead, zinc, mercury, arsenic, silver, etc. may be present in all types of fuels such as crude oil. Trace elements of these metals need to be removed from crude oil. [0005] Various methods have been developed to remove trace metal contaminants in liquid hydrocarbon feeds prior to fractionation. One of the metallic contaminants in cr...
