[0079] One and five micron average particle size graphite test pieces measuring 0.25 inches (0.635 cm) thick and 2 inches by 2 inches (5.08 cm by 5.08 cm) were heat-sealed (sealed with pyrolytic carbon coating) and coated with 400 to 500 nm Thick yttrium oxide coating. The one micron average particle size samples were run at 800°C for two 30 minutes, and the five micron average particle size samples were run at 800°C for one 60 minute cycle. Gravimetric measurements were taken before and after each heat treatment and are given in Table 1 below. The weight loss after 60 minutes was the same for the 1 and 5 micron samples. The bottom sample in each case had less weight loss than the top sample because it had less exposure. Both samples exhibited delamination of the yttrium oxide coating.
