A combination descender, pulley, and force limiting rope brake for rope rescue has a supporting plate having a one-way pulley sheave rotatably mounted thereto for free-wheeling rotation of the sheave in only a first rotational direction. A fixed brake member is mounted rigidly to the supporting plate. A movable brake member is pivotally mounted to the supporting plate. A pinching opening is defined by the gap. The rope passes in a first direction through the gap when the sheave is free-wheeling in the first rotational direction. The movable brake member translates relative to the fixed brake member in cooperation with rotation of the sheave. The descender comprises a handle and a cam that are movable between a securing position and a sliding position of the rope. The cam defines a first stop and a second pin. The handle has a first pin coming into contact with the first stop to form a first mechanical link and a second stop coming into contact with the second pin. A self-braking descender having a panic function and being formed by a body including a channel through which a cord extends in both directions. One end of the body is provided with an actuation lever formed by two projecting sides, a solidly connected appendage and a friction hole through which the cord also extends, and the lever can be folded onto the body. The other end of the body is provided with a head formed by a preferably semi-circular part including two projections and a rear cam with toothing in order to increase the friction in the panic position. The invention relates to an adjustable speed descender, comprising a left speed-adjusting handle, a right speed-adjusting handle and a main support. A handle return spring in the lower middle of the left speed-adjusting handle is fixedly connected with the lower middle of the right speed-adjusting handle.
