A system and method provide for the creation and operation of real-time enterprise-wide, personalize supervisory and control data acquisition systems. Personalized SCADA applications are constructed from a virtual application service and a personal agent framework using simple drag and drop operations or other high level action. The virtual application service includes a communications gateway that communicates with disparate and non-interoperable systems and external field devices to communicate low level time data collected from such systems into the application environment transforming the collected data in a single common data format. The virtual application service includes application cells that receive the reformatted data and process it to provide high level analysis and context, storing the processed data in an object server. The object server provides a unified, hierarchical object model for all of the data received from the underlying devices and systems. The virtual application service communicates with personal agent frameworks containing presentation cells and service agents. The service agents are representative of the virtual application service, and provide the personal agent framework with access to the object server to receive and send data from the object server to the presentation cells. The presentation cells subscribe to the object server's data objects via the service agent. Presentation cell provide a graphical representation and mapping of data objects and hence underlying devices and systems, to allow a user to manage and control such systems.

A method and apparatus for broadcasting media objects for such bandwidth-intensive applications as Media on Demand (MoD) or Video on Demand (VoD) employ a novel StairCase Broadcast (SCB) scheme. A media server in accordance with one example of the invention includes a fragmenter that fragments media objects into multiple segments, with each segment provided to a corresponding streamer. Each streamer periodically and continuously streams data associated with its corresponding media segment on a connection between the server and a media client. A download controller in the media client selectively causes the proper streams to be received for downloading from the server in accordance with the fragmentation of the selected media object and the number of streams that the client can simultaneously receive for downloading. A selector is operable to cause data from each successive segment to be downloaded from the corresponding stream immediately regardless of the position in the period associated with the successive segment. By its design, the method and apparatus of the present invention allow for lossless broadcast of media contents with de-coupled per-media-object server and client bandwidth design considerations.

A method and apparatus for providing peer ownership of shared objects. In the invention, shared objects are implemented as a shell object with shared object state stored in shared memory. Each process that shares the object is granted a shell object within their process space which points to the object state in shared memory. All processes share equal access to the shared object, with no single process determining the lifetime of the shared object. The shutdown of any single process results in the termination of that process's respective shell object, without the necessary termination of the shared object state in shared memory. There is therefore no shutdown problem. Further, performance is enhanced because all processes access the shared object state in shared memory in what is essentially an in-process call. In an embodiment of the invention, a peer ownership manager acts as the object server for all shared objects whose object state resides in shared memory. A global table is maintained within the peer ownership manager which contains the shared memory offset location of each object's state referenced by the GID (global identifier number) of the object. Also, for each process, a shell table is maintained in which existing shell objects for a given process are referenced by the offset value for the object's state in shared memory. Methods are provided for supporting object webs in shared memory, and for putting dynamically sized data and standard non-peer objects into shared objects in shared memory.

According to the present invention, a plurality of particular items (i.e., words, pictures, logos, etc.,) are defined on a physical document. These items are linked to copyrighted hardcopy or softcopy edited objets, such as chapters, notes, pictures, video or audio elements. For identifying and selecting the items defined in the physical document, these items are automatically illuminated by luminous signals (or light spots) generated by an opto-touch foil. The opto-touch foil operates under the control of a user workstation. An illuminated item is selected by the user by pressing the opto-touch foil over the illuminated position of this item. The method and apparatus are particularly applicable to use over the internet with web servers and web browsers. In a computer system containing an object server, a method and apparatus for providing access to objects and methods via arbitrary remote protocols is disclosed. This includes a mechanism known as the protocol adapter framework that allows protocol adapters to manage remote socket sessions, encrypt communication on this session, translate text to the local character set, perform security validation of the remote user, log incoming work requests, classify the incoming work request for differentiated service purposes, and queue the work for execution.
