The invention discloses a method for inputting characters by a touch screen, comprising the following steps: dividing each simulation press key on a soft keyboard of the touch screen into at least two areas; enabling each area to correspond to one character, and storing coordinate range parameters of each simulation press key as well as coordinate range parameters corresponding to each area on the simulation press key in the soft keyboard and a mapping relation between each area and the character; acquiring initial position coordinate parameters corresponding to initial input operation; determining the simulation press key to which the initial input operation belongs according to the acquired initial position coordinate parameters, and amplifying the simulation press key according to amplification parameters set in advance; acquiring termination position coordinate parameters corresponding to termination input operation; and determining input characters according to the termination position coordinate parameters. The invention also discloses a device for inputting characters by a touch screen. Applying the device can reduce the operation frequency of a user and reduce the probability of choosing error characters, thereby improving the character input efficiency.
