A method and electronic consumer device for creating an individual spatial listening zone for a user provided. The method includes receiving an input audio signal and processing it to generate first and second ultrasonic electric audio signals. The ultrasonic signals are provided to first and second ultrasonic transducers which convert them into directional ultrasonic acoustic signals. These signals are directed to a spatial listening zone where the user is located. Through non-linear interaction of the ultrasonic signals in air within the spatial listening zone, an audible sound signal is produced for the user that corresponds to the desired audio based on the input signal. The audible sound is substantially confined to the spatial listening zone and inaudible outside it. Various techniques for dynamically adjusting the spatial listening zone based on user position are disclosed. The system allows for creation of personalized audio experiences while minimizing disturbance to others nearby.
