Incremental tuning process for electrical resonators based on mechanical motion

The present invention is a method for adjusting the resonant frequency of a mechanical resonator whose frequency is dependent on the overall resonator thickness. Alternating selective etching is used to remove distinct adjustment layers from a top electrode. One of the electrodes is structured with a plurality of stacked adjustment layers, each of which has distinct etching properties from any adjacent adjustment layers. Also as part of the same invention is a resonator structure in which at least one electrode has a plurality of stacked layers of a material having different etching properties from any adjacent adjustment layers, and each layer has a thickness corresponding to a calculated frequency increment in the resonant frequency of the resonator.

Piezoelectric speaker and method of manufacturing the same

In a piezoelectric speaker, an acoustic diaphragm is thicker than a piezoelectric thin film and is formed of a more flexible and higher elasticity material than the piezoelectric thin film, thereby greatly improving output sound pressure in a low frequency band and reducing sound distortion. Further, the piezoelectric thin film is attached to the acoustic diaphragm in an inclined structure in which the piezoelectric thin film is horizontally turned from the acoustic diaphragm, thereby preventing a standing wave from being created by structural symmetry and minimizing sound distortion.

Method of fabricating quartz resonators

A method for fabricating VHF and / or UHF quartz resonators (for higher sensitivity) in a cartridges design with the quartz resonators requiring much smaller sample volumes than required by conventional resonators, and also enjoying smaller size and more reliable assembly. MEMS fabrication approaches are used to fabricate with quartz resonators in quartz cavities with electrical interconnects on a top side of a substrate for electrical connection to the electronics preferably through pressure pins in a plastic module. An analyte is exposed to grounded electrodes on a single side of the quartz resonators, thereby preventing electrical coupling of the detector signals through the analyte. The resonators can be mounted on the plastic cartridge or on arrays of plastic cartridges with the use of inert bonding material, die bonding or wafer bonding techniques. This allows the overall size, cost, and required biological sample volume to be reduced while increasing the sensitivity for detecting small mass changes.
