1539 results about "Electrophonic hearing" patented technology

Electrophonic hearing is the direct stimulation of the auditory nerves by external electromagnetic fields. In 1962 Allan H Frey carried out a series of experiments which proved that microwaves can produce the sound even in those who are deaf. The theory is unable to explain why only the sense of hearing is affected - though there are rare reports of people noting odd smells accompanying an aurora display. See also the discussion of the Electrophonic effect/Microwave auditory effect which covers various mechanisms in detail. P

Personalized sound system hearing profile selection process

A method of generating a personalized sound system hearing profile for a user. The method begins by selecting an initial profile, based on selected factors of user input. In an embodiment, the initial profile is selected based on demographic factors. Then the system identifies one or more alternate profiles, each having a selected relationship with the initial profile. The relationship between alternate profiles and the initial profile can be based on gain as a function of frequency, one alternate profile having a higher sensitivity at given frequencies and the other a lower sensitivity. The next step links at least one audio sample with the initial and alternate profiles and then plays the selected samples for the user. The system then receives identification of the preferred sample from the user; and selects a final profile based on the user's preference. An embodiment offers multiple sound samples in different modes, resulting in the selection of multiple final profiles for the different modes. Finally, the system may apply the final profile to the sound system.

Active noise reduction for audiometry

InactiveUS6396930B1Maximize noise control performanceAccurate comparisonEar treatmentAudiometeringNoise controlNoise field
The technology of active noise reduction (ANR) is incorporated into audiometry testing in a variety of formats. Analog feedback, digital feedback, adaptive feedforward, and adaptive feedback noise control schemes are presented for use in audiometry to reduce the ambient noise heard by the test subject, allowing subject testing in higher ambient noise fields. Audiometer test signals are appropriately compensated so the test results are accurate and comply with existing calibration standards for audiometers. Existing audiometry headphone technologies are modified so that ANR can be accomplished while satisfying existing standards for audiometric testing. Embodiments are also defined for alternate headphone arrangements that may not conform to current (1997) audiometric testing standards but provide sufficient performance advantages to warrant new standards for audiometry testing in the future.

Hearing aid system with a low power wireless link between a hearing instrument and a telephone

The invention relates to wireless communication between listening devices, in particular to a hearing aid system comprising a hearing instrument and a telephone apparatus. The invention further relates to a method of receiving a telephone call and to the use of a hearing aid system. The object of the present invention is to provide a relatively simple, reliable scheme for receiving a telephone call in a hearing instrument. The problem is solved in that the telephone apparatus comprises a transmitter for establishing a short range digital, low-power link to a hearing instrument comprising a corresponding receiver. This has the advantage of providing a relatively simple and low power solution, where at least the incoming part of a telephone conversation is wirelessly transmitted via a low-power link. The invention may e.g. be used for the communication between a hearing instrument and a telephone, where a standard wireless interface for local connectivity, such as a Bluetooth interface, is not technically feasible or not available for other reasons.

Method of obtaining a characteristic, and hearing instrument

According to the invention, a hearing instrument comprising at least one inner microphone operable to determine a sensing signal representative of an acoustic signal at a position in front of the user's eardrum—which may be an acoustic signal at a position between an ITE (or ITC or CIC) hearing instrument and the eardrum or between an earpiece and the eardrum—is used. In accordance with the invention, in front of the eardrum an acoustic signal is produced. The inner microphone creates a sensing signal representative of the acoustic signal, and the signal processing unit of the hearing instrument determines a characteristic of the user's ear canal based thereon and memorizes values indicative of the characteristic. According to a preferred embodiment, the characteristic is an acoustic coupling transfer characteristic, which is determined based on a comparison of a signal representative of the output signal of the signal processing unit's digital signal processing stage and the sensing signal. In contrast to the state of the art, no control loop is necessary to adapt the gain to the ear canal characteristic, but the memorized values may be used therefor.
