A weather resistant sound attenuating communications headset of modular construction includes two ear cup modules, a microphone boom module, a head band module, a headband cable module, and a termination cable module. The modular construction allows easy replacement of modules as well as selected components of the modules under field conditions without the need for tools. Replaceable water resistant thin film membranes are employed to provide weather protection as well as hygienic protection for the microphone, speaker and amplification electronics. The thin film membranes which cover areas which come into intimate contact with the wearer are easily replaceable under field conditions. Thus a headset that is shared by more than one user can be hygienically cleansed by simple replacement of the microphone and ear cup membranes.

A single chamber headphone apparatus and earcup design is provided which enhances wearer comfort, reduces headphone weight, facilitates ease of use, maintenance and operation by providing an improved internal chamber and battery cap configuration. An audio system includes an earplug with a speaker to deliver sound to the ear, and/or a microphone which captures sound in the ear canal, and an earmuff is worn over the earplug. The earplug receives sound signals from the earmuff (and/or transmits captured sound signals to the earmuff) by translating such sound signals into light signals which are transmitted over a free space situated between the earmuff and earplug. The light signals are then received at the earplug and/or earmuff and converted to electrical signals which may be further transmitted (e.g., from the earmuff to some external communications device) or converted to sound (e.g., in the earplug by having the electrical signals drive an earplug speaker). If power is required by the earplug, the need for on-board power sources may be avoided by converting light transmitted from the earmuff into power at the earplug. Electrical shock and physical snag hazards are avoided, and the earmuff is easily put on and removed, owing to the lack of wires or other physical connections between the earplug and earmuff. Additionally, by avoiding wires or radio transmission between the earplug and earmuff, electromagnetic interference may be reduced.

A helmet includes a shell with an impact resistant exterior surface formed by an upper shell and a rear shell. The upper shell is shaped to protect a top portion of a wearer's head, the rear shell shaped to protect an occipital portion of the wearer's head. The earphone includes an ear cup, at least one speaker disposed in the ear cup, a processing unit disposed in or attached to the ear cup and connected to the speaker, and at least one sensor disposed in or attached to the ear cup and connected to the processing unit. The sensor is configured to sense a movement of the earphone or an environmental change of the earphone and to send the processing unit a signal representing the movement or the environmental change. The processing unit is programmed to process the signal and to generate a changed stereo signal for the speaker. The speaker is configured to receive the changed stereo signal and to generate a changed stereo sound effect according to the changed stereo signal.

A noise canceling headphone includes a microphone provided in a headphone housing, collecting external sound, a canceling signal generating circuit generating a canceling signal in response to a signal output from the microphone which cancels external sound passing through the housing without being attenuated by a sound insulating characteristic of the headphone, a compensating signal generating circuit generating a compensating signal that compensates for the external sound attenuated by the sound insulating characteristic of the headphone, an adding circuit that adds a musical signal input from the exterior to the compensating signal, and a speaker unit that outputs an output signal from the adding circuit and the canceling signal.

A set of adjustable and convertible headphones includes a headband, an adjustment member, and an earpiece. The adjustment member is connected to the headband by a hinge; earpiece has a channel receiving the adjustment member and is slidably connected to the adjustment member. Rotation of the adjustment member with respect to the headband is spring-loaded in only one direction. The adjustment member and the earpiece in combination include a detent mechanism for resisting sliding movement of the earpiece with respect to the adjustment member. An ear thermometer includes a main body having a side provided with a sensing head, and a disposable ear cap removably mounted on the sensing head of the main body and having a periphery provided with a pull tab having a root portion formed with a breakable slit connected to the periphery of the ear cap.
