A billing process is disclosed for a information dispersal system or digital data storage system. In one embodiment of the invention, the original data to be stored is separated into a number of data “slices” or shares in such a manner that the data in each subset is less usable or less recognizable or completely unusable or completely unrecognizable by itself except when combined with some or all of the other data subsets. These data subsets are stored on separate digital data storage devices as a way of increasing privacy and security. As dispersed file shares are being stored or removed from a grid of distributed storage locations, a set of metadata tables are created, separate from the dispersed file share storage, to maintain information about the original data size of each block, file or set of file shares dispersed on the grid. The original data size information in these separate metadata tables is used to determine usage information based upon the original file size even though the file has been dispersed onto a storage grid that contains file slices who size may not relate to the original file size and the file slices may have been compressed by the system in order to reduce storage space or improve transmission time. As such, the billing process is able to enable a broad range of commercial billing options for billing for commercial data services on an information dispersal grid.

A cluster storage system comprises a plurality of nodes that access a shared storage, each node having two or more failover partner nodes. A primary node produces write logs for received write requests and produces parity data for the write logs (storing the parity data to local non-volatile storage). By storing parity data rather than actual write logs, the non-volatile storage space within the cluster for storing write logs is reduced. Prior to failure of the primary node, the primary node also sub-divides the write logs into two or more sub-sets and distributes the sub-sets to the two or more partner nodes for storage at non-volatile storage devices. Thus, if the primary node fails, its write logs are already distributed among the partner nodes so each partner node may perform the allotted write logs on the storage, thus improving the response time to the primary node failure.

The storage size optimization is preferably performed by determining an optimum intra-array and / or inter-array storage order based on a geometrical model. The geometrical model provides a representation of the address space occupied by an array as a function of time and allows the calculation of the window size of the occupied address / time domain of the array. Where calculations would be time-consuming, these may be shortened by making simplifying assumptions, e.g. calculation of upper and lower bounds of the window size of the occupied address / time domain of an array rather than an exact calculation. System and method for distributing updates to runtime systems without destabilizing compatibility

Multiple versions of a runtime system, such as a software emulation application that emulates a legacy hardware architecture, are allowed to co-exist in the memory of a new hardware architecture. The operating system software of the new hardware architecture reads configuration data from a database or table to decide which version of the runtime system is desirable for an application program or game that is being loaded or is currently running, and, if a match is found, only that runtime system is invoked. To reduce storage footprint, the different versions of the runtime system may be stored using “differential patching” techniques. In this configuration, the operating system will always launch the same basic runtime system binary, but it will select a different differential patch to apply at run-time based on the title as determined during the database lookup. In this fashion, future changes to the runtime system to correct software bugs, incompatibility issues, and the like only need to be tested for the relevant target application programs or games.
