Combined vertical and horizontal rope climbing apparatus

A combination horizontal and vertical rope-pulling device that uses a hydraulic braking assembly that is mounted on a vertical frame to support an endless rope that is placed over a number of pulleys. A pivoting boom is attached at the top of the frame. In the vertical mode, the rotating boom is positioned at an angle extending rearward from the vertical frame. The rope passes over a number of pulleys to simulate a vertical rope for climbing. In the horizontal mode, the rotating boom is rotated down so that it is parallel to the vertical frame. The rope follows the downward run of the boom and around the pulleys. In this way, the user can use the machine as a horizontal rope-pulling machine.

Climbing wall structure and method of construction

A climbing wall structure comprising of a primary frame and a plurality of wall panels is described. Each wall panel has a periphery adapted for abutment with an adjacent wall panel. Each wall panel is connected to adjacent panels with a mounting bracket, such that the wall panels form an integral exterior surface adapted for climbing. The primary frame and the wall panels are connected with kicker struts. Each kicker strut has a first end and a second end. The first end is mounted to a non-peripheral region of the wall panel. This differs from the prior art walls which connect kicker struts to angle iron or tube steel surrounding the periphery of a wall panel. Prior art walls are thus heavier, use more material, and not easily disassembled. In the present invention webbing is also used for positioning. A method for installing an artificial climbing wall structure is also described.

Inertial resistance exercise apparatus and method

An exercise apparatus and method utilizes a flywheel mounted on a rotatable axle. The user exercises by accelerating and decelerating the rotation of the flywheel. For example, a line which wraps around the axle provides a mechanism for accelerating and decelerating the flywheel when a user applies a pulling force to the line. The inertia of the flywheel resists the user applied pulling force and provides the exercise mechanism. Preferably, spool mounted on the axle and variable pivot locations provide a mechanism for easily varying the exercise resistance.

Self-regulating endless climbing wall

An improved simulated climbing wall provides a self-regulating endless climbing surface. The structure includes a form including upper and lower at least partially cylindrical outer surfaces, a planar forward surface, and an open back surface. A continuous belt includes an inner surface and an outer surface. The inner surface is disposed in sliding engagement with the cylindrical surfaces and planar forward surface of the form, and the outer surface of the belt includes a plurality of raised features configured for climbing by a user. A tensioning shoe engages with the inner surface of the belt through the open back surface of the form, and a mechanism, coupled to the tensioning shoe, is operative to a) relieve tension on the belt as a user climbs upwardly, thereby increasing rotational slippage of the belt around the form, and b) increase tension on the belt as a user moves downwardly, thereby reducing or terminating rotational slippage of the belt around the form. In the preferred embodiment, a pair of pivoting levers are provided, each having one end coupled to a climber and a second end coupled to the tensioning shoe such that, as a climber ascends the belt, the levers are raised, reducing the frictional engagement of the inner surface of the belt against the form, and as a climber moves downwardly on the belt, the levers are lowered, increasing the frictional engagement of the inner surface of the belt against the form.
