Problems solved by technology

[0013] None of these prior art formulations are entirely satisfactory for food coating applications (e.g. they have unsatisfactory mechanical properties)
The powder coating compositions exemplified in DE 2411465 would also not be satisfactory for such applications

Embodiment 1

[0132] Embodiment 1: the synthesis of the amorphous polyester (A) containing carboxylic acid group

[0133] Propylene glycol (347.14 parts) was placed in a conventional four-neck round bottom flask equipped with a stirrer, a distillation column connected to a water-cooled condenser, a nitrogen inlet, and a thermometer connected to a thermostat.

[0134] While stirring under nitrogen, the contents of the flask were heated to a temperature of approximately 130°C at which point 760.35 parts of isophthalic acid, 45.67 parts of trimellitic anhydride, and 2.00 parts of n-butyltin trioctoate were added. Continue to gradually heat up to a temperature of 230°C. Starting at 180° C., water was distilled off from the reactor. When the distillation at atmospheric pressure ceased, a vacuum of 50 mmHg was gradually applied. After three hours at 230° C. and 50 mm Hg, the following properties were obtained:

[0135] AN 46.4mg KOH / g

[0136] Brfld 175℃ (cone / plate) 7590mPa.s

[0137] Tg...

Embodiment 2

[0138] Embodiment 2: the synthesis of the amorphous polyester (A) containing carboxylic acid group

[0139] In the same manner as described in Example 1, 2-ethyl-2-butyl-1,3-propanediol (504.16 parts), terephthalic acid (471.22 parts) and n-butyltin trioctoate (2.00 parts) Add to reaction vessel. The temperature of the reaction mixture was gradually increased to 220°C under nitrogen atmosphere. The mixture was stirred and kept at 220° C. until an acid number below 5 mg KOH / g was obtained. The reaction mixture was then cooled to 170-190°C, followed by the addition of 118.92 parts of trimellitic anhydride. The temperature is maintained for approximately two hours until a polyester having the following properties is obtained:

[0140] AN 73.5mg KOH / g

[0141] Brfld 175℃ (cone / plate) 5590mPa.s

[0142] Tg(DSC, 20° / min) 57℃

Embodiment 3

[0143] Embodiment 3: the synthesis of the amorphous polyester (B) containing carboxylic acid group

[0144] According to the procedure described in Example 1, 397.34 parts of propylene glycol, 764.86 parts of adipic acid, 21.20 parts of trimellitic anhydride and 2.00 parts of n-butyltin trioctoate were reacted until a polyester having the following properties was obtained:

[0145] AN 22.2mg KOH / g

[0146] Brfld 100℃ (cone / plate) 1100mPa.s

[0147] Tg(DSC, 20° / min) -45℃

Abstract

There is described a powder coating composition suitable for food contact use comprising a mix of: (A) a first polyester that is amorphous and COOH functional being obtained IPA, TPA and no more than 10 mole % neopentyl glycol (NPG); (B) a second optional COOH functional polyester obtained from an aliphatic diacid and an aliphatic diol, and (C) a curing agent that comprises functional groups reactable with the COOH of the polyester(s). The powders are suitable for coating the interior of metal cans especially those holding alcoholic beverages.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to certain thermosetting powder compositions which are especially useful in food contact applications. Background technique [0002] Thermosetting powder compositions are widely used for the preparation of paint or varnish coatings for articles such as household appliances and accessories for the automotive industry. These powders generally contain thermosetting organic binders, fillers, pigments, catalysts and various additives for adapting their properties to their intended use. [0003] Typical binders for the preparation of such thermosetting powder paints contain carboxyl-containing polymers, such as carboxyl-containing polyesters or polyacrylates, and epoxy compounds, such as triglycidyl isocyanurate, containing glycidyl Glyceryl-based acrylic copolymers or β-hydroxyalkylamides) or mixtures of hydroxyl-containing polymers such as hydroxyl-containing polyesters with blocked or unblocked isocyanate or melamine resins....
