Problems solved by technology

Controversy exists over the determination of exact diagnostic criteria for metabolic syndrome and the fact that no drugs are approved for the treatment of metabolic syndrome, although associated dyslipidemia and hypertension have specific pharmacologic interventions

Embodiment 1

[0117] This example describes a viscous fiber blend comprising pellets (also known as viscous fiber composite (VFC), commercially known as PolyGlycopleX ) dietary fiber composition on insulin resistance, body weight, pancreatic β-cell viability, and lipid profile in Zucker diabetic rats.

[0118] Rationale: Selection of Male Zucker Diabetic Rats (ZDF) (ZDF / Cr1-Lepr fa / fa ) was used as the animal model for this study because it is considered an excellent model for adult-onset obesity with type II diabetes and / or reduced insulin sensitivity at an earlier age (C.Daubioul et al., J.Nutr.132: 967-973 (2002); J.M. Lenhard et al., Biochem. & Biophys. Res. Comm. 324:92-97 (2004); J.N. Wilson, Atheriosclerosis 4:147-153 (1984)). ZDF is a mutant lacking the brain leptin receptor. Leptin is a protein secreted by adipose tissue that signals appetite suppression. Thus, in these mutant rats, there is no feedback signal for reducing appetite or inducing satiety. ZDF rats consume food at...

Embodiment 2

[0214] This example describes a high-sucrose diet-induced obesity rat model to determine the viscous fiber blend (VFC granules) including granulation (also known as fiber complex PolyGlycopleX ) dietary fiber composition on pancreatic dysregulation, dyslipidemia and obesity.

[0215] Rationale: As described in Example 1, the new water-soluble fiber composite VFC particles, also known as (made from konjac mannan, xanthan gum, and alginate to form a highly viscous glycan complex with high water-retaining properties and gel-forming properties), reduced body weight and improved insulin sensitivity in Zucker diabetic rats sex. However, the observed effects of VFC particles in Zucker diabetic rats are variable relative to serum triglycerides (TAG). Various fibers have been observed in other studies to reduce variability in serum TAG levels, which may relate to fiber type and specific animal models (W. U. Jie et al., Biomed. Environ. Sci. 10:27-37 (1997); A. Sandberg et al., Am....

Embodiment 3

[0240] This example describes studies in overweight and obese adult human subjects showing ) dietary fiber composition on short-term weight loss and associated risk factors

[0241] Rationale: According to recent figures published by the World Health Organization, obesity has reached epidemic proportions worldwide, with more than one billion overweight adults suffering from this chronic condition (www.who.int, accessed 3 / 15 / 08). Coronary artery disease and stroke, insulin resistance, (metabolic syndrome), type II diabetes, hypertension, and cancer are all well-known medical complications of excess body weight (K. Fukioka Obesity Res 10 (Supp 12): 116S-123S (2002 )). In addition, recent epidemiological studies have confirmed that adult obesity is associated with a significant reduction in life expectancy. This study showed that the life expectancy of 40-year-old male and female non-smokers was shortened by an average of 7.1 and 5.8 years, respectively, due to obesity (A. Pee...

Abstract

Dietary supplements and food comprising a mixture of glucomannan, xanthan gum and alginate. The foods and supplements are used for delaying the onset of, slowing the progression of, and / or ameliorating at least one symptom of, metabolic syndrome, type I diabetes, type II diabetes, pancreatic disease or hyperlipidemia. The mixture of glucomannan, xanthan gum and alginate is analysed using standard methods of carbohydrate analysis involving acid hydrolysis of the polysaccharides followed by chromatographic separation.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to Application Nos. 61 / 312,630, filed March 10, 2010, and 61 / 357,658, filed June 23, 2010, the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to dietary fiber compositions, medicinal foods comprising dietary fiber compositions, and their use for delaying the onset and / or reducing the severity of metabolic syndrome and type II diabetes. Background of the invention [0004] Obesity and metabolic syndrome have become increasingly common as conditions that can lead to type II diabetes. Visceral obesity, elevated serum glucose and insulin levels, and hypertension and dyslipidemia are a group of clinical conditions collectively known as the metabolic syndrome (E.J. Gallagher et al., Endocrinol. Metab. Clin. North Am. 37:559- 79 (2008)). These conditions have been found to be due to increased insulin resistance of the cel...
