example 1

[0019] Synthesis of AA / IA / VAc terpolymers (30 / 30 / 40 composition) using tert-butyl peroxypivalate as initiator in a mixed solvent, IPA / water: 75 / 25

[0020]A two liter round bottom flask was equipped with a mechanical stirrer, heating mantle, thermocouple, condenser and inlets for addition of monomer and initiator. An initial mixture of 62 g (24.8%) water and 188 g (75.2%) isopropanol (IPA) was charged to the kettle. The kettle contents were stirred and 65 g (30%) of itaconic acid monomer (IA) was charged to the kettle along with 5 g (2%) of heel charge of t-butyl peroxypivalate initiator . The kettle contents were heated to 80°C. A monomer charge was prepared by mixing vinyl acetate (VAc) (86 g, 40%) and acrylic acid (AA) (65 g, 30%) monomers together and fed to the reactor over 2 hours. An initiator charge consisting of 10 g (4.63%) tert-butyl peroxypivalate dissolved in 35 g IPA was fed over a 2.5 hour period. The reaction was carried out at reflux and maintained at 80°C...

[0021] Example 2 (RP 1034):

[0022] Synthesis of acrylic acid / itaconic acid / vinyl acetate terpolymer (30 / 30 / 40 composition) in mixed solvent, IPA / water: 75 / 25, using sodium persulfate as initiator

[0023] A two liter round bottom flask was equipped with a mechanical stirrer, heating mantle, thermocouple, condenser and inlets for addition of monomer and initiator. An initial mixture of 52.7 g water and 187.5 g IPA was charged to the kettle along with 65 g itaconic acid monomer. The kettle contents were heated to 80°C and additional sodium persulfate prepared by dissolving 5 g of salt in 10 g of water was added to the kettle. The synthesis procedure described above in Example 1 was repeated with an initiator feed consisting of 10 g (4.63%) sodium persulfate dissolved in 35 g water followed by a Dean Stark solvent exchange over a 2.5 hour period, As described in Example 1 above. Final product solids 32%, molecular weight Mw 18620, Mn 2541, Mw / Mn 7.32. Residual monomer conte...

example 3

[0029] Synthesis of AA / maleic acid / VAc terpolymer (30 / 30 / 40 composition) in a mixed solvent, IPA / water: 75 / 25, using tert-butyl peroxypivalate as an initiator

[0030] A two liter round bottom flask was equipped with a mechanical stirrer, heating mantle, thermocouple, condenser and inlets for addition of monomer and initiator. An initial mixture of 63.9 g (25.4%) water and 188 g (74.6%) IPA was charged to the kettle. The kettle contents were stirred and 65 g (30%) maleic anhydride was charged to the kettle. The kettle contents were heated to 80°C. An initiator charge was prepared using 15 g (6.9%) tert-butyl peroxypivalate in 35 g IPA. The initiator was fed into the kettle for 2 minutes at temperature, after which the monomer feed was started. Similar to Example 1, a monomer charge was prepared by mixing vinyl acetate (86 g, 40%) and acrylic acid (65 g, 30%) monomers together and fed to the reactor over 2 hours. Initiator was fed for a total time of 152 minutes. The react...

Abstract

A method for solution polymerization. The method comprises polymerizing in a solvent a monomer mixture comprising: (a) 5 to 95 wt% of a C3-C5 ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid; and (b) 5 to95 wt% of vinyl acetate; wherein the solvent comprises 51 to 88 wt% isopropanol and 12 to 49 wt% water.

Description

Background technique [0001] The present invention generally relates to a process for polymerizing vinyl and acrylic monomers in solution. [0002] Solution polymerization of vinyl and acrylic monomers in mixed solvents is known. For example, US Patent No. 5,632,976 discloses the polymerization of acrylamide monomers with acrylic acid and its esters in a mixture of water and an organic solvent. However, said reference does not disclose the polymerization process of the monomers claimed in the present invention. Contents of the invention [0003] The present invention relates to a solution polymerization method; said method comprises polymerizing a monomer mixture in a solvent, said monomer mixture comprising: (a) 5 to 75% by weight of C 3 -C 5 Ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid; (b) 10 to 60 wt% vinyl acetate; and (c) 10 to 50 wt% (meth)acrylic acid; wherein the solvent comprises 51 to 88 wt% isopropanol and 12 to 49% by weight water. [0004] The present invent...
