A system and method for authoring and playback of multimedia content together with sharing, interconnecting and navigating the content using a computer network is disclosed. Creation, presentation and sharing of multimedia content and applications takes place within an active authoring environment, where data is always “live,” and any piece of content can be played alongside any other piece of content at any time. In this environment, there are no formal delineations between one “presentation” and another based on such things as file boundaries, other data storage constructs or the like. Instead, any piece of content can potentially be part of the “current” presentation at any time simply by being “started.” As a result, three factors become critically important: (1) the framework in which content is organized, stored and distributed; (2) the control mechanisms by which content is played and presented, and (3) as with any authoring system, the methods and means by which users create and edit content. In each of these areas, the present invention makes significant innovations which are highly complementary, resulting in a new type of software application that seamlessly integrates authoring, playback and networking in an active, shared, rich media environment optimized for personal communications.

An authoring method includes generating an authoring interface configured for assisting a user to author a text string in a source language for translation to a target string in a target language. Initial source text entered by the user is received through the authoring interface. Source phrases are selected that each include at least one token of the initial source text as a prefix and at least one other token as a suffix. The source phrase selection is based on a translatability score and optionally on fluency and semantic relatedness scores. A set of candidate phrases is proposed for display on the authoring interface, each of the candidate phases being the suffix of a respective one of the selected source phrases. The user may select one of the candidate phrases, which is appended to the source text following its corresponding prefix, or may enter alternative text. The process may be repeated until the user is satisfied with the source text and the SMT model can then be used for its translation.

A multimedia authoring system uses a graphic interface display which is implemented as a part of a flow editor and is used to create and to program interactive multimedia presentations and coursework. The authoring system also includes other editors (e.g., a database editor, an expression editor, and an object editor) used to perform other editing functions required to create presentations. A computer system provides the ability to construct and edit a Data Definition File (DDF) containing hierarchically related elements of data, some of which are dynamic in that they must execute in order to produce or retrieve data. A client computer system having knowledge of a DDF appropriate for its uses sends a request to a server, which contains or can retrieve the DDF requested by the client. The request contains parameters used by the server to customize the resulting keyed data file for the client's purposes. Upon receipt of the request, the server copies the DDF into a coupled memory, performs requested parameter substitutions, and executes dynamic elements to produce resulting data elements. The process is repeated recursively for all elements of the hierarchical structure, until no dynamic elements remain, then the resulting keyed data file is returned to the client for its uses. Data elements may be derived from a plurality of sources, and these sources may be combined and manipulated using a plurality of data operations, including relational algebra or structured query language, enabling joins and merges between multiple sources and formats. A template-based art creation system is used for the real-time creation of advertising art images, resulting in an automatically created, high resolution, pre-press ready art file for use in directly creating printing plates for commercial printing presses. At the client module, a user creates and/or modifies a simulated advertising template, which includes a low-resolution background image for a particular type of advertisement (e.g., based on business type) and rendering data specifying where text and graphic elements are placed with respect to the background image. Subsequently, information relating to the customized template is transmitted to the server module, which produces the pre-press ready art file. The file is a high-resolution equivalent of the low-resolution customized template as prepared by the user via the client module.

A system for constructing a plurality of objects, in accordance with the present invention, includes a content authoring system for generating fragments and providing include relationships between the fragments. A dependency parser is included for receiving the fragments and parsing the include relationships. A dependency analyzer is provided for determining an efficient order for constructing the plurality of objects from the fragments based on the include relationships. A constructor constructs the plurality of objects in the order determined by the dependency analyzer.

A collaborative authoring system and method is disclosed. A collaboration server stores objects and applications open the objects stored on the collaboration server as documents. Collaborative authoring is enabled through a combination of coarse-grained server locks on objects stored in a collaboration server for short term server transactions and fine-grained application specific internal locks to lock portions of documents for authoring sessions. When an application begins an authoring session, an object stored in the collaboration server is opened as a document in an application, a server lock is applied to the object, internal locks are applied to portions of the document, and the server lock is removed from the object.
