The preparation method comprises the following steps: respectively dropwise adding an aqueous solution of an alkali metal compound and perchloromethyl mercaptan into an aqueous solution of 1, 2, 3, 6-tetrahydrophthalimide, and controlling the pH value of a reaction system to be 7-11 in the dropwise adding process; and reacting after dropwise adding to obtain captan. According to the method, the alkali metal compound aqueous solution and the perchloromethyl mercaptan are dropwise added, and the pH value of a reaction system is controlled within a specific range in the dropwise adding process, so that decomposition of 1, 2, 3, 6-tetrahydrophthalimide and perchloromethyl mercaptan in an alkaline environment can be effectively avoided, the occurrence of series side reaction can be effectively reduced, and the yield of 1, 2, 3, 6-tetrahydrophthalimide and perchloromethyl mercaptan is improved. The utilization rate of the raw materials and the product yield are improved under the condition of not using a catalyst.
