Systems and methods for identifying trends in web feeds collected from various content servers are disclosed. One embodiment includes, selecting a candidate phrase indicative of potential trends in the web feeds, assigning the candidate phrase to trend analysis agents, analyzing the candidate phrase, by each of the one or more trend analysis agents, respectively using the configured type of trending parameter, and/or determining, by each of the trend analysis agents, whether the candidate phrase meets an associated threshold to qualify as a potential trended phrase.

A method and system for creating a database of categorized web feeds for facilitating web feed organization is disclosed. One exemplary method includes ascertaining a web feed identifier and searching a categorized collection of websites to determine a hierarchical folder path for the web feed identifier. For example, the Open Directory Project may be searched to determine an appropriate hierarchical folder path for the web feed identifier. The web feed identifier is placed in a corresponding hierarchical folder path within the database of categorized web feeds. The database of categorized web feeds can then be used as a tool for organizing web feeds on a client computer.

A powered dispenser for dispensing individual sheet segments from a continuous roll of sheet material provided with spaced tear lines comprises a powered feed mechanism, a releasable, powered drive mechanism, a powered transfer mechanism, a pair of web sensing sensors, a capacitive sensing system providing automatic sensitivity adjustment, and control circuitry. A dual power supply system provides a mechanical lock-out functionality, and the control system is protected from electrostatic build-up on the surface of the feed roller. The web sensor, and an antenna plate of the capacitive sensing system, are provided on respective printed circuit boards mounted in overlying relation. The web sensors, together with the control circuitry, are also used to detect the depletion, or absence, of a working roll of sheet material, whereupon the control circuitry controls the powered transfer mechanism to automatically transfer the web feed supply from a depleted working roll to a reserve roll. The powered transfer mechanism may include a motor driven transfer bar, or provide motor driven release of a spring biased transfer bar. Another arrangement allows for ready release of a roll core, and drop of the same into an open dispenser cover for removal.

A feed mechanism for feeding a web of print media past a printhead is provided. A high speed input system for an inserter machine. The system controlling a guillotine cutter, a cutter transport, and an upstream web handler transport to increase throughput for mail production. The controller is programmed to control the high speed input module in accordance with a repeating cycle. The cycle time is determined as an amount of time between a first web feed request and an earliest possible time that a subsequent second web feed request can be acted upon. A cutter transport motion control profile initiates feeding of a document length of web after receiving the first feed request. The cutter motion control profile causes the cutter blade to begin descending when the cutter transport has moved the web a trigger distance, calculated such that the cutter blade will first make contact with the web immediately when the web has been halted by the cutter transport motion profile. A web handler transport profile moves the web the document length at velocities and accelerations less than the velocities and accelerations of the cutter transport. At the end of the cycle, the web handler transport causes the web to be transported at a nominal velocity selected to maintain an appropriate amount of the web loop in the web handler. Within the web handler a control loop expands and contracts as the downstream cutter transport stops and starts as the cutter blade cuts the web in each cycle.

A method (and corresponding system and computer program product) that prompts users for web feed subscription based on web browsing activities of the users is disclosed. The method monitors web browsing activities of a user related to a web page, and determines that the web page supports web feeds. Responsive to the user repeatedly visited the web page, the method determines whether the monitored web browsing activities related to the web page meets predetermined criteria. If so, the method prompts the user with options to subscribe to the web feed. If the user responds positively to the prompt, the method subscribes to the web feed.

An arrangement and a data transmission method are disclosed. The amount of traffic originated by the subscriptions of syndicated web feeds by terminals using point-to-point connections is monitored, the terminals being capable of broadcast reception. The cost of delivering the amount of traffic is compared to a threshold value. If the cost exceeds the threshold value the web feed is redirected to a broadcast network which starts transmitting the feed. A message is sent to the terminals capable of broadcast reception and subscribing to the feed, the message indicating a command to start receiving the feed from the broadcast network.

A system for providing targeted Web feed subscription suggestions calculated based on IP (“Internet Protocol”) addresses. Web feeds are automatically suggested to users based on the IP (Internet Protocol) address of the user's computer system and previous feed subscriptions made from other computer systems having similar IP addresses. Feed suggestions may be weighted based on differing levels of IP address similarity, in order to reflect differing levels of geographic proximity between users. Users may be permitted to expressly indicate which of their feed subscriptions are to be made public through the feed reader user interface when they make subscriptions. In response to such user indications, the disclosed system passes the IP address of the user's computer system to the centralized server system together with a name or other identifier of the feed that was subscribed to.

A method, computer program product, and electronic device for transferring updated digital content to a client device includes determining that the updated content is available from a web feed. The updated content is obtained from the web feed and stored within a datastore. An indication is provided to the client device, via a network, concerning the availability of the updated content within the datastore. The updated content is transmitted, via the network, from the datastore to the client device.

User input is received to create a bookmark in a web browser for a non-feed Uniform Resource Locator (URL). A web feed associated with the non-feed URL is determined. A subscription to the web feed is automatically created. An indication of new web content is received from the web feed. The bookmark for the non-feed URL is decorated to provide a visual indication of the new web content.

A computer-implemented method for organizing and presenting electronic information on a client device. The method can include enabling a user to create a plurality of topics by inputting criteria that define each of the topics. A plurality of electronic items are then automatically associated with the topics by applying the criteria to the electronic items. The electronic items can include at least two different electronic items from different electronic sources, such as e-mail accounts, newsgroups, blog websites or web feeds. A user interface is displayed on a client device where the topics are displayed to the user to enable the user to select a topic and display a list of the electronic items that have been automatically associated with the selected topic. The user can select and manipulate an electronic item from the list of electronic items that is associated with the selected topic.
