The method comprises the steps of adding a modifier, i.e., octadecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride into hectorite gel so asto prepare a mixture, enabling octadecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride molecules to be thoroughly combined with hectorite molecules and inserted into inter layers of hectorite or replaced with cations in the hectorite, enabling the mixture to become loose from viscous so as to separate out clear water, filtering the clear water, and baking the mixture, thereby obtaining the stearalkonium hectorite. The stearalkonium hectorite prepared by the method is high in yield and high in purity, is free of ferric ions and has an angle of contact with water greater than 90 DEG, so that the stearalkonium hectorite can be melted into oily substances and can be used for improving viscosity in systems of coating materials, ink, cosmetics and the like to prevent products from layering, precipitating and sagging; and due to no ferric ions, a paint film is free of oxidation and discoloration.
