[0119] Preparation of the composition

[0120] The low arginine composition can be prepared as a food product suitable for consumption by cats. These food products can be of any consistency or moisture content; that is, the compositions can be wet, semi-moist or dry food products. "Wet" food products are typically those with a moisture content of 60% to 90% or greater. "Dry" food products are generally those with a moisture content of 3% to 11%, and are usually manufactured in the form of small pieces or kibble. A "semi-moist" food product typically has a moisture content of 25% to 35%. The food product may also contain components having more than one consistency, such as soft, chewy meat-like particles or pieces, and kibble with an outer cereal component or coating and an inner "cream" component.

[0121] Low-arginine food products can be prepared in canned or wet form using conventional food preparation processes known to those of ordinary skill in the art. Typically, gr...

[0130] A study was completed in which cats with the AG genotype were compared to cats with the homozygous GG genotype. The study used 34 cats and compared three diets. All foods were fed for one month, and at the end of the one-month feeding period, the cats' blood was analyzed for BAIB. Each cat consumed each food such that each cat had a blood sample from each food after a one-month feeding period.

[0142]Blood was collected for determination of plasma metabolomic profiles. Plasma levels of BAIB and / or 2-oxoarginine can be measured by a commercial laboratory (Metabolon, Durham, NC, USA). The extracted supernatants were separated and run on gas chromatography and liquid chromatography mass spectrometer platforms. The peaks for each of BAIB and / or 2-oxoarginine are known, and the area under the peaks for each sample can be normalized to known samples. (See Evans, A.M. et al. (2009). Abstract

Disclosed are methods of analyzing the presence of one or two copies of the minor allele A of SNP A 1212891692 in a biological sample obtained from a feline subject and/or the concentration of beta-aminoisobutyrate and/or 2-oxoarginine in said sample. The methods can be used in methods for identifying feline subjects with an increased likelihood or risk of calcium oxalate calculus formation and methods for treating feline subjects to reduce the risk of calcium oxalate calculus formation. The treatment comprises administering a low arginine diet to the feline subject. A low arginine feline food composition is disclosed.

Description

Background technique [0001] Bladder stones are relatively common in cats. Cats with conditions that affect the lower urinary tract, such as struvite or calcium oxalate bladder stones, usually have one or more symptoms such as urinating outside the litter box, straining to urinate, frequent urination, producing only a small amount of urine at any time fluid, blood in urine and licking of external genitalia. Results from abdominal X-rays and ultrasounds may lead to the discovery of bladder stones. Urinalysis results such as urine pH, presence of crystals, and presence of infection may lead to the diagnosis of calcium oxalate bladder stones. Bladder stones can be removed by surgery, cystoscopy (in female cats), or lithotripsy. A sample of the stone can be analyzed to confirm the diagnosis. [0002] Historically, bladder stones in cats have been composed of struvite, which is magnesium ammonium phosphate. To prevent struvite bladder stones, many feline diets are formulated so...
