A method for controlling the illumination of a plurality of illuminated controls (15-21, 24) of a motor vehicle (22) is described, wherein the illumination of the individual controls (15-21, 24) is controllable. The method comprises the following steps: acquiring a number of parameters that characterize at least one current operating condition of the motor vehicle (22) (1, 5); based on the acquired parameters, determining a subset of the plurality of illuminated controls (15-21, 24) whose use is intended for the at least one current operating condition (2, 10, 11); controlling the illumination of the plurality of illuminated controls (15-21, 24) such that the determined subset of the plurality of illuminated controls (15-21, 24) is visually distinguished from the remaining controls (15-21, 24) (3, 8).
