Vehicle lighting methods and apparatus, in which an LED-based light source is configured to generate at least visible radiation associated with a vehicle. The light source is controlled such that the generated visible radiation has a variable color over a range of colors including at least three different perceivable colors. Examples of vehicles in which such methods and apparatus may be used include, but are not limited to, an automobile, airplane, boat, non-motorized vehicle, etc. The LED-based light source may be disposed inside the vehicle (e.g., dashboard, instrument panel) or outside the vehicle (e.g., brake lights, undercarriage lighting), and may be controlled to generate white light as one of the perceivable colors. A user interface may be employed to facilitate an adjustment of the variable color of the generated visible radiation. Additionally, information relating to at least one condition associated with the vehicle may be employed to control the LED-based light source such that the variable color of the generated visible radiation is based at least in part on the condition associated with the vehicle.

An embodiment of this invention relates to an intelligent lighting device that can receive signals and change the illumination conditions as a result of the received signals. A lighting system for a vehicle having luminescent or “glow-in-the-dark” markings placed on an interior surface of the vehicle and a light source located remotely from the markings to illuminate the markings, particularly at night. Disclosed is a Mushroom-shaped light guide for a homogeneous illumination of a circular scale of a motor vehicle operating device by means of a light source (LED) arranged opposite a light input surface of a mushroom-shaped cone, wherein a light input surface has a cylindrical recess, and edge of which is rounded off in a circle with a radius R between a lateral surface and an axial surface, and a base of which is provided in a form of a ball surface which projects centrally, whereby the mushroom-shaped cone has a conical end section. This produces an increased parallel alignment of the light beams, which effects an improved illumination of the dial.

Information is displayed by irradiating a visible light on a specific position based on at least one of vehicle state information, vehicle surrounding information, and vehicle interior information. The present invention relates to an apparatus and method of perforating the cover layer or soft skin of an automotive trim panel such as an instrument panel with a laser to allow light to bleed through the perforations. The light source would preferably be a low heat generating or “cool” type source such as an LED. The light source would be attached to a suitable substrate or incorporated in to a flexible printed circuit and coupled to the vehicle electrical system. This method would enable fill switch integration to a trim panel and provide a seamless styling opportunity regarding the electrical controls. This method would help reduce cost and weight, improve quality, and promote new seamless styling theme.

The display device includes a light guide connected to the surface and a light-reflecting portion formed in the light guide. The light-reflecting portion is disposed at least partially over one of the indicia. The light guide collects light, directs the light toward the light-reflecting portion and illuminates at least one of the indicia. The light guide and the light reflecting portion provide an enhanced or decorative effect for one or more of the indicia.

For automatically adjusting a vehicle light level based on a viewing location of an occupant, a system, apparatus, method, and computer program product are disclosed. The apparatus, in one embodiment, includes an image sensor, an occupant viewing location module that determines an illuminable region corresponding to a viewing location of a vehicle occupant based on data from the image sensor, a light level module that determines a light level for the illuminable region, and an illumination control module that adjusts an illumination setting of at least one light associated with the illuminable region based on the determined light level. In some embodiments, the apparatus includes an occupant recognition module that identifies the vehicle occupant, wherein the light level module determines the light level based on the identity of the vehicle occupant.

A vehicle interior light source unit for being disposed at an installation hole formed in a panel of a vehicle interior. The light source unit includes a connector portion that is disposed on a back side of the panel and includes a tubular main body extending parallel to the panel, a substrate that is mounted on the connector portion and mounts a light emitting element thereon, and a case to be inserted into the installation hole. The case includes an upper wall including an opening for radiating light emitted from the light emitting element to the vehicle interior, a pair of sidewalls including a connector engagement portion to be engaged with a side portion of the main boy of the connector portion.

Various implementations of illumination systems are described herein. For example, the illumination system includes a light guide having an outer surface and an inner surface that extend between a first end and a second end of the light guide, and at least one light source disposed adjacent the first end of the light guide. The light source emits infrared or visible light into the first end of the light guide. The light guide transmits the light from the light source through at least a portion of the outer surface of the light guide. In addition, the system may include a second light source disposed adjacent the second end of the light guide. The second light source emits infrared or visible light into the second end of the light guide.
