Embodiment 1-5 and comparative Embodiment 1

[0076] Examples 1-5 illustrate the effect of PPO on the dynamic mechanical properties of PSA materials.

Embodiment 1

[0077] Example 1 was prepared as follows: IOA / AA / (PS), PPO, tetrahydrofuran and chloroform were added to a glass bottle at a ratio of 98:2:50:100 (parts by weight). The contents of the vials were tumbled overnight to obtain a homogeneous solution. Rheological samples were prepared as described in the "Dynamic Mechanical Properties" section.

[0078] Examples 2-5 were prepared using the method and materials of Example 1, except that the ratios of IOA / AA(PS) and PPO were 96:4, 94:6, 92:8 and 90:10, respectively.

[0079] Comparative Example 1 was prepared using the method and materials of Example 1, except that the parts ratio of IOA / AA(PS) and PPO was 100:0.

[0080] The dynamic mechanical property test was carried out on Examples 1-5 and Comparative Example 1.

[0081] figure 1A graph of the temperature dependence of the elastic modulus (G') is shown for samples with increasing PPO concentrations. As the amount of PPO increases, the flow region begins to shift to higher te...

Embodiment 6-10 and comparative Embodiment 2

[0083] Examples 6-10 illustrate the effect of compositions of the present invention on the properties of pressure sensitive tapes of various thicknesses.

[0084] Examples 6-10 were prepared according to the methods of Examples 1-5, except that the solution was knife-coated onto a polyethylene terephthalate film with a thickness of about 50 μm (2 mils), and heated in a constant temperature of 65° C. Dry outside in a flowing hot air oven for 10 minutes. The final thickness of the adhesive composition was 44 μm (1.75 mils), or 56 μm (2.2 mils).

[0085] Comparative Example (CE) 2 was prepared using the method and materials of Example 6, except that the ratio of IOA / AA / (PS) to PPO was 100:0.

[0086] The caliper, 180° peel strength at two different peel rates, and 70°C shear retention were measured for Examples 6-10 and Comparative Example 2. The results are shown in Table 1 below.

[0087] Example

[0088] As shown in Table 1, when PPO is present at a concentration ...

Abstract

Pressure sensitive adhesive compositions and pressure sensitive adhesive articles containing the adhesive compositions are disclosed. The adhesive compositions of the invention generally demonstrate favorable cohesive strength at elevated temperatures. The adhesive compositions contain an acrylic acid ester copolymer having pendant styrenic polymeric moieties mixed with a polyarylene oxide polymer. The adhesive composition may be a foam.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates to adhesives, and more particularly to pressure sensitive adhesives. In particular, the present invention relates to pressure sensitive adhesives having good shear properties at elevated temperatures. Background technique [0002] Pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) compositions are used in a wide variety of fields, including many assembly and manufacturing applications. Many applications require the PSA to carry loads at high temperatures, typically in the range of greater than 70°C, thus requiring high bond strength PSAs. A conventional method of increasing bond strength at elevated temperatures is to chemically crosslink the PSA using radiation methods such as thermal radiation, ultraviolet (UV) radiation, gamma radiation, and electron beam (EB) radiation, among others. Although these methods improve bond strength, they often negatively affect other properties of the PSA, including the peel strength of the PSA. Summary of th...
