Problems solved by technology

But the alloy disclosed in the above-mentioned patent has the following disadvantages: it can show a large grain size, resulting in poor deformability and the formation of large pools from eutectic eutectics leads to localized surface melting when the alloy is subjected to the heat of a gas welding torch
Ether is said to be flammable and toxic, and lower alcohols are said to be poor solvents

[0105] The components of solution 1.2 appeared to be well mixed without prior dissolving of the cetanethiol in the organic solvent. Argentium silver coupons were soaked in the resulting solution for 10 minutes and then rinsed. The surface of the Argentium sample became hydrophobic, indicating the formation of a layer of cetyl mercaptan attached to the surface of the Argentium silver. Rinse well in water without leaving any visible deposits on the surface after rinsing.

[0108] Cetanethiol in Simple Shower Gel

[0109] Simple shower gel (a clear shower gel) was from Accentia Health and Beauty Ltd, Birmingham, UK. It contains sodium laureth sulfate (10.0%), cocamidopropyl betaine (2.8%), coco fatty acid diethanolamide (1.8%), sodium chloride (0.95%) and glycerin, the balance is water . Analysis was performed as follows: The shower gel was dried on a steam bath under a steady flow of nitrogen and then processed in a vacuum oven. Dry samples were dissolved in deuterated methanol and analyzed by proton NMR. Proton NMR was compared with the spectra of known samples of sodium lauryl ether sulfate, cocamidopropyl betaine and coco fatty acid diethanolamide to estimate the proportion of these components. The salt content of the gel was determined with Corning chloride analyzer 926, and the sodium content was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry.

[0117]For solution 3.1, cetyl mercaptan was added to a concentrated mixture of sodium lauryl ether sulfate and cocamidopropyl betaine, then water was added and the solution was cold mixed. The resulting mixture initially had a very thick foamy white texture which became a clear gel on settling. Solution 3.2 is somewhat similar. Solution 3.3 was watery, initially somewhat clear, with numerous bubbles on top of the solution, which became clear when settling overnight. Solution 3.4 was mixed with gentle heating to about 35°C. Heating seems to help the mixing step slightly. After a few minutes of mixing, the mixture foamed badly. ...

Abstract

Disclosed for use in treating a metal, e.g., an alloy of silver as aforesaid, is a water-based composition comprising a treatment agent selected from an alkanethiol, alkyl thioglycollate, dialkyl sulfide or dialkyl disulfide and at least one of an amphoteric, nonionic or cationic surfactant in a concentration that is effective to solubilise the treatment agent. Preferably the composition comprises at least a non-ionic relatively hydrophobic surfactant e.g. cocamide DEA. The composition is particularly suitable for the treatment of Ag-Cu-Ge alloys.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a water-based composition useful for treating metals, either silver alloys or other metals that require surface treatment to impart tarnish resistance, such as copper, brass or nickel. Background technique [0002] Silver Alloy and Its Tarnish Resistance [0003] Sterling silver provides manufacturers and silversmiths with a versatile and reliable raw material, but further cleaning and polishing of the finished product to temporarily remove undesirable tarnish products is unavoidable. Silver and silver alloys are known to form a dark film, known as a tarnish, which destroys the luster when exposed to everyday weather conditions. [0004] Since ancient times, it has been recognized that unalloyed "pure" silver is too soft to withstand normal use, and a proportion of base metal is usually added to increase hardness and strength. In England, legislation that has existed since the fourteenth century stipulates a minimum s...
