Care setting. A generic UK term for any place where an individual receives health care—e.g., hospital, care home with nursing, care home, or home.

Automatic Patient and Device Recognition and Association System

A system associates a patient and patient identifier with a medical device and includes an interface. The interface acquires data representing an image of a patient in a care setting and showing a medical device in the vicinity of the patient and acquires data identifying the patient. An image data processor analyzes the acquired data representing the image to identify the medical device type by, analyzing the acquired data to determine a shape of the medical device, comparing the determined shape of the medical device with predetermined template shapes of known device types and identifying the medical device type in response to the shape comparison indicating a shape match. A data processor associates the identified medical device type with the data identifying the patient. An output processor initiates generation of data indicating an association of the identified medical device type with the data identifying the patient.

Disease specific ontology-guided rule engine and machine learning for enhanced critical care decision support

A disease-specific ontology crafted by a consensus of expert clinicians may be used to semantically characterize / provide semantic meaning to dynamically changing patient electronic medical record (EMR) data in critical care settings. Hierarchical, directed node-edge-node graphs (concept maps or Vmaps) developed with an end-user friendly graphical user interface and ontology editor, can be used to represent structured clinical reasoning and serve as the first step in disease-specific ontology building. Disease domain Vmaps reflecting expert clinical reasoning associated with management of acute illnesses encountered in critical care settings (e.g. ICUs) that extend core clinical ontologies, developed and reviewed by experts, are in turn extended with existing medical ontologies and automatically translated to a domain ontology processing engine. Semantically-enhanced EMR data derived from the ontology processing engine is incorporated into both real-time ‘track and trigger” rule engines and machine learning training algorithms using aggregated data. The resulting rule engines and machine-learnt models provide enhanced diagnostic and prognostic information respectively, to assist in clinical dual modes of reasoning (analytical rules and models based on experiential data) to assist in decisions associated with the specific disease in acute critical care settings.

Clinical decision support system

A clinical decision support system enabling sharing of medical knowledge in a machine executable format, implementable as a network-based system in which individual executable knowledge modules (EKMs) define the data requirements for assessing a patient, the conclusions that can be drawn using that data, and instructions on how to generate those conclusions. Using standards-based messages transmitted over a network, client decision support applications provide patient data to the system and receive patient-specific assessments and recommendations. The system permits re-use of executable medical knowledge across diverse applications and care settings, easy authoring of knowledge modules, and use of the system framework to implement decision support applications having significant clinical utility.

Method and Apparatus for Preventing the Spread of Germs While Coughing or Sneezing

A wearable tissue / handkerchief, cough / sneeze absorbent pad according to the invention comprises a washable, reusable armband or alternately, a completely disposable unit consisting of an adhesive strip, either to which is attached one or more disposable absorbent pads / tissues. These pads can be peeled off and used while held in the hand as a conventional tissue but preferably, when worn on one's arm, can be coughed / sneezed into while the device is on the arm. This allows the device to be utilized even when one's hands are not available, such as for anyone working in a health care setting, a chef preparing food or a waiter carrying plates of food. This prevents the common occurrence of sneezing / coughing out into the air or into one's hands or sleeve, which are unsanitary practices. The present invention has a pad shaped to receive a user's nose and mouth, and a raised welt and / or a baffle around the perimeter greatly reduces the amount of germs that escape, as does the shape which conforms generally to the position of the user's nose and mouth. Optionally, a pocket or pockets contained within the armband can hold gloves, facemask(s) and antibacterial wipes.

Method for maintaining homeostasis in a health care setting

A method for maintaining homeostasis for a patient in a health care setting includes the steps of monitoring a physiological parameter and comparing the parameter against an expected parameter range. When it is determined that a difference between the monitored physiological parameter and the expected parameter range presents a patient condition requiring a corrective measure, an alarm warning is presented. The alarm warning has a signature characteristic distinguishing it from other alarm warnings. The alarm warning may be musical and distinguishable based on genre, tempo, loudness, or pitch or, alternatively may be visual. The alarm warning may be adapted to distinguish one patient from other patients. Alternatively, the alarm warning may distinguish differing levels of severity associated with a patient condition of a particular patient or to distinguish between multiple conditions suffered by the same patient.

Automatron Blood Pressure Manager for Nitroglycerine

InactiveUS20080281259A1Maintaining tight blood pressure controlMedical devicesCatheterVeinEmergency medicine
A means of tightly controlling blood pressure in the acute care setting is elusive. Presently, the bedside nurse manages the rate of the intravenous blood pressure medication being infused. The invention seeks to allow continuous polling of the blood pressure, through telemetry monitoring, and adjust the rate of the intravenous antihypertensive nitroglycerin. The method algorithm allows for a set point of either mean arterial pressure (MAP) or systolic blood pressure (SBP) to be input. The nitroglycerin drip rate is then adjusted to maintain the set parameter range.

Methods and apparatus for the detection and differentiation of non-sialated proteins from sialated proteins in a fluid sample

The present invention is directed to methods and devices for detection of cerebrospinal fluid leaks by detection of the CSF protein beta-2 transferrin. The microfluidic devices and methods of the invention combine capture and specific labeling of transferrin from a sample with a subsequent step of isoelectric focusing to separate transferrin isoforms for detection. Microfluidic channels and chambers are patterned on a substrate, designed so that on one region (i.e., a microfluidic channel or chamber) of the substrate transferrin is selectively captured from the sample and labeled, and in a second region of the susbstrate, transferrin isoforms are separated using isoelectric focusing. Detection of two transferrin bands, indicating the presence of beta-2-transferrin, indicates the presence of CSF in the sample. The devices and methods of the invention provide a safe, efficient, and ultrarapid modality with high specificity and sensitivity for the detection of CSF in the acute care setting.
