A computer-based system for generating a video edit decision list, which tabulates video editing events and video synchronization points corresponding to the video editing events. The invention accepts a sequence of video and audio manipulations produced by a digital video editing system, each manipulation effecting a particular video editing event, and generates, based on the manipulation sequence, a list of video editing events and corresponding synchronization points. The invention then conforms the list to a user-specified format selected from a plurality of video edit decision list format templates, provided by the system, which each specify a model for defining video editing events distinctly in that format, and then the video edit decision list is output in the user-specified format. The invention is adapted to also convert a video edit decision list from a first format to a second, user-specified format; and further is adapted to generate a sequence of video and audio manipulations to be used by a digital video editor for editing a video, based on a video edit decision list.

A method of providing an interactive game through playback of video, the method comprising the steps of providing a video player with a processor, the processor capable of accepting user input, drawing graphics or text on top of video playback, and controlling playback of sounds; providing media with a primary video stream for standard playback, and game instructions working in cooperation with the video stream, and an edit decision list; reading the edit decision list into the CPU and playing the portions of the video stream as instructed by the edit decision list; and superimposing other graphics onto the video to create an interactive game experience.

The invention provides an editing system for editing and combining media material into a resulting media composition. The method includes in one or more electronic processing devices: retrieving an Edit Decision List (EDL), the EDL providing an event driven timeline for the interactive media content that defines events including: one or more segments of pre-existing media content to be used in the generation of the interactive media content; timestamps for when the one or more segments of pre-existing media content are to be introduced into the timeline and their associated duration; one or more user interactions to be used in the generation of the interactive media content; and, timestamps for when the one or more user interactions are to be introduced into the timeline and their associated duration; and, processing the EDL to generate the interactive media content in real time by: retrieving the one or more segments of pre-existing media content; recording the one or more user interactions using a sensing device of the user device; and, combining the one or more recorded user interactions with the one or more segments of pre-existing media in accordance with the event driven timeline of the EDL.
