System and method for home automation using wireless control rf remocon module based on network

A home automation system using an infrared (IR)/radio frequency (RF) integration remote control module based on a network. At least one IR/RF integration remote control module (100) is disposed at a predetermined location of a home automation region. The IR/RF integration remote control module (100) with a wireless interface function integrates an RF modulation/reception/transmission function and an IR modulation/reception/transmission. A set-top box (200) is appropriately disposed so that it can carry out an interface function for controlling the IR/RF integration remote control module (100) and a wired/wireless Internet access function. The set-top box (200) receives various control commands over an Internet network using transmission control protocol/Internet protocol (TCP/IP) and controls the IR/RF integration remote control module (100). Even though various pieces of equipment using the conventional IR reception/transmission scheme or a new electronic product equipped with an RF module is added to the home automation system using an RF modulation scheme, an automation operation and a bidirectional control operation based on the integrated IR and RF transmission scheme can be appropriately carried out. Thus, the home automation system and method can be cost-effectively and conveniently implemented.

Vehicle-status device and system for remotely updating and locally indicating the status of a vehicle

A vehicle status device and system for remotely updating and locally indicating the status of a vehicle. The vehicle status device is located in a vehicle and indicates status information for the vehicle on a vehicle-status indicator on the vehicle when the device is interrogated by an interrogating unit. The device includes a database of status information for the vehicle and owner. An update receiver in the device receives encoded updated information from a wide area paging network for storage in the database. An interrogation receiver receives an interrogation signal from the interrogating unit, and a processor decodes the status information and sends it to the status indicator in response. The system also includes an interrogating unit which includes a police radar transmitter or a laser transmitter for transmitting the interrogation signal to the vehicle status device. The status indicator includes a set of summary status lights and may also include an LCD display for detailed status information. In an alternative embodiment, the device uses a wireless Internet access device to access external databases and download the vehicle status information either periodically or on demand. The information may be passed directly to the status indicator without the need for an internal database.

Distributed satellite-based communications network and method of providing interactive communications services using the same

A distributed digital communications network and method for interactive communications, e.g., for cellular, wireless Internet access, digital television, and/or like multimedia services, is provided, that includes one or more global communications satellites positioned and adapted for receiving and relaying packet data communications encapsulating the interactive communications. One or more base station(s) are located in each of a plurality of selected remote geographic regions, and have mobile wireless links to a plurality of subscribers of communications services in the region. A plurality of satellite communications terminals is also provided for communicating with the satellite from the region. Each terminal is located in the selected remote geographic region and associated with one or more of the base stations. In addition, a plurality of user terminals are utilized, each located in the selected remote geographic region and associated with the base station(s) in the region. One or more base station controller(s) located remotely from, or locally with, the base station(s) have programming for controlling the base stations. Furthermore, a single mobile switching center located remotely from, or locally with, the base station controller(s) and the base stations. The switching center, in addition, has a digital communications signal processor for handling digital signal switching between the plurality of base stations, and/or wireline and/or other communications network(s). Finally, a packet data network is utilized between the satellite and satellite communications terminals for interactive data communications throughout the distributed network.

Universal methods and device for hand-held promotional opportunities

A system is described for deriving benefits from the reception and processing of composite video signals from a display device 10 by a hand-held device 12, such as a smart card, personal digital assistant (“PDA”), or mobile phone. Video signals are modulated with auxiliary data creating composite video signals. The users directs the hand-held device 12 toward display device 10 by placing leading edge 18 in the path of the video signal. The composite video signals are then transmitted to and received by a hand-held device 12. Aiming light 24 and / or audio transducer 34 alert the user of hand-held device 12 that auxiliary data is being received. The auxiliary data is then utilized by hand-held device 12. In other embodiments of hand-held device 12, the auxiliary data is received from a decoder box, which in turn transmits the information to device 12 by RF which may be received by the RF antenna 68 of the device. The user receives benefits such as promotional opportunities resulting from the reception of the auxiliary data. Such opportunities are expressed on visual display 20, which may include a series of lights 20a, 20b, 20c, and / or 20d, or an LCD 44. The lights and LCD provide promotional opportunities which may be redeemable and conventional stores or via the Internet. Hand-held devices 12 are outfitted with a PCMCIA interface 70 or wireless Internet access to obtain such promotional activities on the Internet.Hand-held device 12 may have housing 14 in various shapes to promote various promotional opportunities. On front surface 16 of the hand-held device may have indication of a sponsor 17.
