The camera module inclues an image sensor. The camera module is configured to receive a user input, and, in response to the user input, capture the image via the image sensor. A low cost, high speed, high resolution laser printer method and apparatus for re-writable media is presented. A method for finishing of printed sheets into booklets is described. Novel mechanical operations permit the manufacture of a very low-cost, off-line booklet maker for use with desktop laser and ink jet printers. The technology can scale to medium-speed, in-line booklet manufacture. The method is novel because most of the finishing operations are performed on a sheet-by-sheet basis using precision paper positioning and a transverse tool carrier that cuts, scores, folds, punches, and staples the sheets. To form a finished saddle-stitched booklet, each sheet is cut to length determined by its sequence in the booklet and paper thickness, scored, punched (if required), folded, accumulated in a stack, and stapled. The sheet-wise method allows finishing operations to be done with low-cost tools and low actuation forces.

A force sensor particularly suited for use in an electronic stylus that senses the contact force on its nib for recording pen strokes and handwriting recognition. The sensor has a housing for a load bearing member for receiving an input force to be sensed and associated circuitry for converting the input force into an output signal indicative of the input force. The bearing member is movably mounted within the elongate body (up to 100 microns). The input force acting on the load bearing member is caused by contact on the nib. The load bearing member is biased against the direction of the input force. The force sensor also has a light source and photo-detector for sensing levels of illumination from the light source. Associated circuitry converts a range of illumination levels sensed by the photo-detector into a range of output signals, so that the illumination level sensed by the photo-detector varies with movement of the load bearing member within the elongate body such that the output signal from the circuitry is indicative of the input force. Using an optical sensor avoids the need to use a delicate piezo-resistive sensor that requires careful tolerancing during production.

The inventive method includes the steps of specifying pagination information including an indication of whether a page is to be selectively included in the book, determining whether the page is to be assembled into the book based on the pagination information, and generating page description language instructions for production of the book in accordance with the pagination information.

A sensing device for sensing region identity data and generating movement data when the sensing device is moved relative to a region of a surface, the region identity data being indicative of an identity of the region, the movement data being indicative of the movement of the sensing device relative to the region, the surface having disposed upon it coded data indicative of at least one region associated with the surface, the sensing device including: region identity sensing means configured to sense the region identity data using at least some of the coded data; motion sensing means configured to generate the movement data; and communications means configured to communicate the region identity data and the movement data to a computer system.

An image forming system has an image forming apparatus which has a printing unit which can perform a printing process of data of a storage unit which can store data of a plurality of jobs and which has a conveying unit which can convey a sheet from the print unit to a sheet processing device which can perform sheet processing, including at least a gluing process, for sheets from the printing unit, the system comprising: a controller adapted to permit a predetermined process related to the gluing process when the job to be processed is a job which meets a predetermined condition, and to inhibit the predetermined process related to the gluing process when the job to be processed is not a job which meets the predetermined condition, thereby overcoming obstacles to realization of an image forming system capable of a gluing process.

A sheet folding and trimming apparatus for a booklet maker or bookbinder includes a folding apparatus and a sheetwise trimming apparatus configured to trim the folded sheet from the folding apparatus on three unfolded sides of the sheet in a sheetwise manner. The location of the sheet folder prior to the sheet trimmer allows the use of a relatively imprecise and inexpensive folding apparatus, such as a buckle folder, and adjusts for the imprecision of the fold by trimming the folded sheet.

A printing system alternately provides both literal finishing and abstract finishing to a print job. The printing system includes a user interface for supplying print job information including desired finishing instructions. A finishing element is also provided which applies a finishing operation to a print job, and a processor is in communication with both the user interface and the finishing element. The processor determines compatibility between the finishing element and the desired finishing instruction and upon determining incompatibility, selects a compatible finishing instruction for the finishing element. The compatible finishing instruction may be either a literal finishing operation available on the printing system, or an abstract finishing operation. Abstract finishing operations include insertion of slipsheets and/or marking separators between compilation boundaries of a print job with data including machine-readable code or human-readable code indicative of the desired final finishing operation.

A method of using a mobile device to authenticate a printed token and output an image associated with the token, the mobile device comprising a sensor and processing means, the method comprising the steps of: using the sensor to sense coded data on the printed token; using the processing means to determine, from the sensed coded data, at least an identity of the token; authenticating the token using the identity; based on at least the identity, determining an image associated with the token; and outputting the image from the mobile device in a visible form.

A bookbinding machine for processing inner books includes a transport system with a multiplicity of inner-book clamps continually movable in a closed continuous track. Each of the inner book clamps is articulated to a circulating roller chain and has a rear-edge stop for aligning the inner books. The bookbinding machine includes workstations that perform positionally accurate operations on the inner books including the application of glue, the application of reinforcement or gauze sections, the application of jackets, binding with wire stitches, the introduction of utilisation features (e.g. punched holes, tear-off perforations, etc.) and the like. The transport system of the inner-book clamps and at least one workstation are driven independently of one another. A measuring system for positional detection of the inner-book clamps or of the inner books is provided in proximity to the independently driven workstation. The measuring system provides inner book or clamp position data used to control the workstation performing positionally accurate operation on the relevant inner book.

A book format, and methods to create such books, where the first story page on one of the leaves of the book and a second story page on an adjacent leaf are in diametric contraposition to each other. The first set of first story pages carries an illustration of a portion of a story with each successive first story page carrying another illustration of another portion of the story, so that the set of first story pages taken together illustrate substantially the entire story. The second story pages carry mirror images of the illustrations on their corresponding first story pages. A combined printing and binding device which includes a media tray, a printhead, an adhesive applicator, a binder and a housing. The media tray is designed to receive and retain a plurality of media sheets. The printhead is a page-width printhead designed to print ink onto a media sheet. The adhesive applicator is designed to apply adhesive to a media sheet. The binder is designed to bind a plurality of media sheets together. The housing is designed to house the media tray, the printhead, the adhesive applicator and the binder. The device is designed to print and bind a media sheet positioned in an original plane of orientation in the media tray by transporting the first media sheet from the media tray, past the printhead and the adhesive applicator, to the binder, whilst substantially maintaining the media sheet in its original plane of orientation.

A method and system for enabling user interaction with computer software running in a computer system via an interface surface and a sensing device. The interface surface contains information relating to the computer software and coded data indicative of a text field. When placed in an operative position relative to the interface surface, the sensing device senses indicating data indicative of the text field and generates movement data indicative of the sensing device's movement relative to the interface surface. The indicating data and movement data are received in the computer system and the text field is identified from the indicating data. The computer software is operated at least partly in reliance on the movement data, and in accordance with instructions associated with the text field.

For manufacturing books having different sizes and comprising a plurality of text pages constituting a book block, a web of material having a given width is sequentially printed in a digital printing station. The printed web of material is then provided either with one weakening line extending parallel to the longitudinal direction of the web of material or with two weakening lines arranged spaced apart and extending parallel to the longitudinal direction of the web of material. Thereafter the printed web of material is transversely cut to produce individual text sheets which are provided with either one weakening line or two weakening lines. These text sheets are then longitudinally folded along the either one weakening line or in sequence along each of the two weakening lines. The folded text sheets belonging to a particular book block are stacked to a stack. The stacks are either temporarily stored for a later binding process or directly supplied to a binding station.

A printing system is provided with a controller and a printing device that houses sheets of printing paper of a plurality of kinds. The controller has a storing means for storing cover page data used for forming a front cover and a rear cover of a booklet and body page data used for forming a body of the booklet, and, after having set different print formats with respect to the cover page data and body page data, successively outputs the cover page data and the body page data to the printing device. The printing device, with respect to the cover page data and the body page data transmitted from the controller, prints the cover portion and the body portion on sheets of printing paper of different kinds based upon the print formats respectively set.
