Etching compositions, curable compositions, packaged products and methods of use for the treatment of bone substrate, i.e., teeth, are described. The etch compositions generally include a gelling agent, an inorganic acid, an organic acid and either a solvent, a surfactant or mixtures thereof. The curable composites include reactive monomers and crosslinking agents that are effective to adhere to the surface of the treated substrate. The methods of the invention provide the ability to modify a bone or bone-like surface so that the curable composition, such as an adhesive resin, can be used in combination with a restorative material.

The invention provides a self etching adhesive dental primer composition, a method of use of the primer composition and a product formed from the primer. The dental product is formed from the primer composition which includes water, surfactant and polymerizable material in suspension in the water. The polymerizable material includes monomers which are water immiscible. Preferably the monomers have an average molecular weight less than 1000. The primer composition is used by applying the composition to unetched dental tooth enamel and the polymerizable material is polymerized to form a dental product having adhesion to the enamel of more than 13 MPa. Improved surfactants which contain at least one ethenically unsaturated polymerizable group are provided in accordance with the invention. Surfactants of the present invention copolymerize with and become an integral part of any polymerizable resin matrix in which they are incorporated. This prevents migration of the surfactant through the matrix or slow leaching-out through the interfaces, and brings advantages of biocompatibility and stability of the physical properties of the cured matrix. In addition, the surfactant becomes a permanent part of the matrix, and forms part components of the matrix.

Dental implant assemblies, custom dental implants, and custom dental prosthesis and components each individually designed and manufactured to replace nonfunctional natural teeth of a specific pre-identified patient are provided. An example dental prosthesis/assembly includes a transgingival interlock abutment having a prosthesis interface formed therein to receive an occlusally-facing dental prosthesis component, and an implant interface form to receive a dental implant body. The prosthesis interface has a custom three-dimensional surface shape formed to create a form locking fit with respect to the occlusally-facing dental prosthesis component when connected herewith. The implant interface also has a custom three-dimensional surface shape formed to create a form locking fit with respect to the dental implant component when connected therewith.

An adhesive system has been developed for orthodontic ceramic brackets which minimizes tooth fracture and makes bracket removal easier and more predictable. The adhesive system makes use of current filled adhesives and a plasticizer (e.g. diethyl phthalate, xylene, etc.). Additions of plasticizer between 10 to 20 weight percent of the adhesive will decrease the adhesion in excess of 50%. This adhesive permits more patient comfort while at the same time allowing for the use of ceramic brackets.

Stable self-etching copolymerizable primer compositions including are provided including compounds having a polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated groups and acidic groups, and optionally comonomers and suitable solvents. A fluoride treated medical implant, such as a dental component, is provided, the medical implant comprising fluorinated metal oxide on the substrate surface. A method for the preparation of such treated implants is also provided, the method involving exposure of the medical implant to a fluorine-containing reagent. The present application provides dental fillers, and methods of making and using dental fillers that include a treated surface that includes phosphorus and a divalent cation. Dental compositions including such dental fillers can be useful for delivering ions to the oral environment.

A method for etching and treating a tooth surface prior to restoration, comprising a solution comprising of an -SO3 terminated compound resin, such as an -SO3H compound resin, and an aldehyde desensitizing compound. In practice, the composition is applied to the tooth surface and not subsequently washed prior to application of an adhesive or other restorative material.

A dental material comprising (a) at least one curable monomer and/or polymer component, and (b) at least one filler component comprising agglomerated oxide particles having a matrix and a doping component, whereby the matrix contains silicon dioxide and the doping component comprises zirconium dioxide, whereby the agglomerated oxide particles are incorporated into the cured polymer matrix of the dental material and are abraded only in layers together with the polymer matrix of the dental material during an abrasion process and do not chip away as individual, intact particles. The present invention provides a dental etching gel composition including phosphoric acid in aqueous solution form, a viscosity-enhancing agent and optionally additives, in which the viscosity-enhancing agent is carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) with the following properties:

• • (a) having a viscosity of about 100 to about 2000 cps when formulated as an aqueous solution containing 1 wt % of CMC; and
  • (b) having an average degree of substitution of sodium salts in molecular formula of about 21% to about 33%.

The dental etching gel composition of the present invention can be used to pre-treat the surface of teeth prior to repair or filling. The etching gel formed by combining phosphoric acid in aqueous solution form with CMC viscosity-enhancing agent having the specific properties stated above is less fluid and thus can be used to etch the specific surface of the tooth so as to obtain a rough surface which improves the close adhesion between teeth and filling resins in the subsequent repairing or filling process.

A dental adhesive composition comprising (i) at least one non-acidic polymerizable monomer having at least one ethylenically unsaturated group, (ii) optionally one or more acidic compounds, (iii) at least one photoinitiator, (iv) at least one solvent, and (v) about 0-40% by weight of one or more fillers; wherein the weight ratio of non-acidic polymerizable monomers/acidic compounds in the adhesive composition is more than about 4.5; the viscosity of the adhesive composition is less than about 350 centipoise (cP) at 25° C.; and the adhesive composition excluding solvent and filler has an acid number of less than about 0.75 mmol NaOH/g. The dental adhesive composition is used with a dental primer composition, which may be provided together in a kit.

An orthodontic adhesive includes components capable of allowing easy debonding of an orthodontic device from a patient's tooth. The adhesive includes an engineered marine mussel protein. The adhesive may include at least one photocleavable moiety. The adhesive is applied in one or more individual layers. One of the components of the adhesive is capable of binding to a tooth and the other component may be capable of binding to an orthodontic device. A method of adhering an orthodontic device to a tooth includes applying a layer of an orthodontic adhesive to either the tooth or the orthodontic device or the tooth and the orthodontic device and affixing the orthodontic device to the tooth with the orthodontic adhesive situated between the tooth and the orthodontic device. The engineered marine mussel protein includes one or more catechol moieties or one or more derivatives of a catechol moiety.

Disclosed is a one-pack type dental adhesive composition comprising:

• • (a) 1.0 to 40.0 parts by weight of a silane coupling agent,
  • (b) 0.01 to 0.4 part by weight of a weak acidic compound which is at least one of organic acid, boric acid and silicic acid, and has an acid dissociation exponent pKa of 3 or more in the form of an aqueous solution,
  • (c) 0.01 to 0.4 part by weight of a strong acidic compound which is at least one of HF, HCl, HBr, HI, HNO₃, HClO₃, HClO₄, HBrO₄, HMnO₄, H₂SO₄ and H₃PO₄ and has an acid dissociation exponent pKa of less than 3,
  • (d) 0.1 to 5.0 part by weight of water, and
  • (e) 20.0 to 99.0 parts by weight of a volatile organic solvent.
