Data Cartridge Library System

The present invention is directed to a data cartridge library system that realizes a reduced cost by reducing the number of certain components, especially expensive components, that are needed to perform certain functions within the library. With respect to certain functions, a reduced cost is realized by using lower precision componentry in combination with componentry that compensates for lower precision while still providing a reduced component cost with respect to a given function. In one embodiment of the invention, a data cartridge picker is provided that: (1) uses a single electro-mechanical device for the functions of grasping a data cartridge, retracting a grasped cartridge from a drive / storage location, inserting a grasped cartridge into a drive / storage location, and releasing a grasped cartridge once position in a desired location; (2) is capable of compensating for variations in cartridge positioning; (3) has a gripping mechanism that moves in a sinusiodal manner; and (4) avoids the wear and tear associated with moving fully retracted gripper mechanism that is not holding a data cartridge from a fully retracted position to a position at which a cartridge can be retrieved. Another embodiment provides a elevator mechanism for moving the cartridge picker in which the guiding portion of the mechanism is also part of the portion of the mechanism that moves the cartridge picker. A further embodiment employs a face plate extension that facilitates insertion of a data cartridge into a drive by a low precision cartridge transport device. Yet another embodiment provides a removable data cartridge holder that: (1) includes a box-like structure for holding data cartridges and a dust cover that can be placed over the opening of the box-like structure when the holder is not in use and when the holder is in use, attached to the box-like portion; (2) an orientation structure that prevents insertion of a data cartridge into the box-like holder if the cartridge is improperly oriented; and (3) retention clips for preventing accidental dislodgement of a data cartridge located in the box-like structure.

Disk cartridge data storage methods and apparatus

Methods and apparatus for storing data which employ a hard disk memory media which is operably supported within a cartridge shell to form a disk cartridge. The disk cartridge can be employed in the manner of a tape cartridge wherein the disk cartridge can be stored in a communicatively isolated condition until required for read / write operations whereupon the disk cartridge can be communicatively linked to another device which transmits data to, or receives data from, the disk cartridge. The disk cartridge can adhere to a given tape cartridge form factor so as to enable both tape cartridges and disk cartridges to be employed together in a single automated library system.

Adjustable cassette for substrates

A cassette (1) for holding and transporting substrates includes a chassis (11), a pair of supporting walls (30) facing each other, a pair of first pivot elements (40), and a pair of second pivot elements (42). The first and second pivot elements are pivotally connected to the chassis and supporting walls, respectively. Each of the supporting walls includes a plurality of supporting members (301) protruding inwardly therefrom. The chassis and the supporting walls define a space for accommodating the substrates on the supporting members. A distance between the supporting walls can be easily adjusted by pivoting the pivot elements. Thus the space defined by the chassis and the supporting walls is adjusted accordingly, in order to accommodate substrates of a particular size. The cassette is adaptable for use with substrates of various sizes simply by pivoting the pivot elements.

Display and storage device

A device for holding, storing and displaying various media articles, such as CDs, CD Cases, DVDs, DVD Cases, Audio Cassettes, Audio Cassette Cases, Computer Mini-floppies, Video Cassette, Video Cassette Cases, Books, Magazines, Pictures, Cards and the like. The device is comprised of a single sheet of relatively thin pliable, resilient material, such as a sheet of vinyl, plastic, and the like, within and through said material are cut a plurality of slits, in sets of two or more slits or slit sets. The lower ends of slit sets are spaced apart by a distance which is less than the transverse dimension of an article to be supported or held, while the upper ends are spaced apart at a distance which is greater than the transverse dimension of said article to be supported or held. The lower ends and upper ends of slit sets are longitudinally spaced apart by a distance that is less than the longitudinal dimension of an article to be supported or held. The lower ends of a slit set are even on the horizontal axis while the upper ends of a slit set has at least one slit that is uneven, shorter or offset from at least one other slit on the horizontal axis. When an article is inserted into the space between slits in a slit set, the material deforms to form a compartment that captures or holds a portion of said article. Compartments are formed from a plurality of slits and / or slit sets and are open-topped / top-loading and are integrally formed with the sheet material. Compartments are capable of receiving at least one article and maintaining the article in an upright position, relatively parallel with the overall plane of the device with at least one part of the article visible for viewing. A slit sets size, shape and spacing is relatively proportional to the size, shape and / or dimensions of the articles thereby forming compatible compartments for the article. A portion of an article is within the compartment and a portion is exposed so as to permit a single article to be easily accessible and grasped by the fingers for easy placement and / or removal there from. The device is mountable to supports, such as a wall, door, and mirror or hung from racks etc.
