[0111]All raw materials except Unicid 700 were purchased from Sigma Aldrich. Unicid 700 was purchased from Baker Petrolite.

[0112] Preparation of trans-dicarboxy-indenofluorenone

[0113] The trans-dicarboxy-indenofluorenone was prepared in three steps starting from commercially available 2,5-dibromo-p-xylene. In the first step, a Suzuki-type reaction between 2,5-dibromo-p-xylene and p-tolylboronic acid was used to prepare Product A as shown in Scheme 1 below. Specifically, 4.07 g (0.029 mol) of p-tolylboronic acid, 4.0 g (0.015 mol) of 2,5-di Bromo-p-xylene, 9.0 g (0.065 mole) potassium carbonate, 6.0 g (0.035 mole) tetramethylammonium bromide and 0.136 g (0.0014 mole) palladium acetate. The solid was purged with argon for 15 minutes, then 40 mL of distilled water was added to the reaction mixture. The temperature was raised to 70°C and the mixture was heated with stirring for about 4 hours. After 4 hours, the reaction was allowed to cool to room temperature, then an...

Abstract

A fluorescent particle includes a fluorescent pigment, such as a trans-dicarboxylic-indenofluorenone, and at least one stabilizing wax chemically attached to the fluorescent pigment. The stabilizing wax includes an amine group at its terminal end and the fluorescent pigment includes at least one carboxylic acid group, where the amine group reacts with the carboxylic acid group to form an amide bond. A method for making fluorescent particles for use in toners by chemically attaching at least one stabilizing wax to a fluorescent pigment where the at least one stabilizing wax includes an amine group at its terminal end and the fluorescent pigment includes at least one carboxylic acid group. A toner may include a resin and the fluorescent particle.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to toner compositions, and more particularly, to toner compositions containing fluorescent particles, which are useful for document security. [0002] related application [0003] U.S. Patent Application No. 12 / 246,120, filed October 6, 2008, describes the preparation of thioxanthene nanopigments (fluorescein yellow) by acid dissolution in the presence of a "molecular dispersant", the entire contents of which are incorporated by reference incorporated into this manual. In this application, a "molecular dispersant" stabilizes the pigment by hydrogen bonding and it is not covalently attached to the pigment. [0004] The preparation of an amide-based dispersant is described in US patent application 12 / 467,692 filed on May 18, 2009, the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference. Such dispersants have been successfully used to disperse magenta pigment red 57:1. [0005] U.S. Patent Application N...
