Problems solved by technology

[0004] Zinc salts have long been generally considered less satisfactory as heat stabilizers for halogen-containing polymers than organotin-based stabilizers, and indeed zinc salts are known to cause catastrophic degradation due to the combustion of zinc

[0161] H-NMR spectroscopy is used to detect the molecular structure of 2-S-(decanoyloxyethylthio)tetrahydrofuran or 2-S-(tetrahydropyranyl)thioethyldecanoate, which is prepared as follows: In the presence of a catalyst, 42.0 g (0.50 mol) of 3,4-dihydropyran was added to 112.2 g (0.50 equivalent) of mercaptoethyl decanoate (14.7% SH) within 45 minutes, while maintaining a nitrogen atmosphere and below The temperature is 35°C, then heated to 50°C and kept at this temperature for 1.5 hours. After cooling the solution, it was washed with two 200 ml portions of 10% aqueous sodium bicarbonate solution and then with 200 ml water. The organic layer was dried with magnesium sulfate to obtain a light yellow liquid, whose SH content was determined to be less than 0.5% by titration with a 0.100N iodine solution in isopropanol. 1 H-NMR(CDCL 3 , Δ) The spectrum is: 2.3(2H, t, -C(=O)-CH 2 -CH 2 ), 2.8(2H, m, -S-CH 2 -CH 2 -), 4.2(2H, m, -S-CH 2 CH 2 -O-), 4.9(1H, m, -O-CH(-S-CH 2 -)-CH 2 -CH 2 -...

Abstract

Flexible, semi-rigid, and rigid vinyl chloride polymer compositions containing a heat stabilizer comprising a latent mercaptan and a mixture of zinc chloride and a zinc carboxylate are substantially free from the offensive odor typically associated with mercaptans and are protected during processing by the degradation products of the latent (blocked) mercaptan which include a free mercaptan. The free mercaptan thus released enhances the activity of the mixture of zinc chloride and zinc carboxylate.

Description

Invention field [0001] The present invention relates to a thermally stable polymer composition that is usually easily thermally induced to degrade. The composition includes a halogen-containing polymer and latent mercaptans that exist during extrusion, injection molding, and other processing of the composition at high temperatures. Degradation products, which are formed during the processing, and include released mercaptans. The released mercaptans increase the activity of metal-based thermal stabilizers in the polymer composition, such as zinc carboxylates, zinc chloride, organotin carboxylates, and thiolates. The invention specifically relates to the thermal stabilization of vinyl chloride polymer compositions by combining latent mercaptans with a synergistic mixture of zinc chloride and zinc carboxylate at very low levels. [0002] The present invention also relates to articles made from this thermally stable vinyl chloride polymer composition, such as rigid pipes and window pr...
