Abstract

The present invention relates to topical compositions characterized in that they comprise as main constituent one or several fragments of hyaluronic acid with a molecular weight of 50,000 to 750,000 and, if desired, retinoids.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to hyaluronate-based topical compositions, and their use in cosmetology and dermatology. Background technique [0002] Hyaluronate (HA) is a major component of the extracellular matrix. In contrast to glycosaminoglycans such as chondroitin sulfate which are present in so-called "hard" tissues such as cartilage, it is especially present in so-called "soft" connective tissues. Thus, this substance is found to be present in significant amounts in the skin. [0003] HA is a non-sulfated linear glycosaminoglycan composed of repeating units of D-glucuronic acid and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (Tammi R., Agren UM., Tuhkanen AL., Tammi M. Progress in Histochemistry & Hyaluronan metabolism in skin. 29(2): 1-81, 1994). [0004] In normal skin, HA is essentially synthesized by dermal fibroblasts and epidermal keratinocytes (Tammi R., already cited). Through these negatively charged residues, HA acts as a water pump, which maintains th...
