A system and method of optimizing transmission of a program to multiple users over a distribution system, with particular application to video-on-demand for a CATV network. The system includes, at a head end of the CATV network a scheduling and routing computer for dividing the video program stored in long term fast storage or short term fast storage into a plurality of program segments, and a subscriber distribution node for transmitting the program segments in a redundant sequence in accordance with a scheduling algorithm. At a receiver of the CATV network there is provided a buffer memory for storing the transmitted video program segments for subsequent playback whereby, in use, the scheduling algorithm can ensure that a user's receiver will receive all of the program segments in a manner that will enable continuous playback in real time of the program. Under the control of controller the receiver distinguishes received program segments by a segment identifier so that redundant segments captured in capture memory are then stored in buffer memory from which the segments can be retrieved and decompressed in data compressor for immediate or subsequent viewing. In one embodiment, the method of this invention includes dividing at least some segments into fragments, and transmitting one fragment of each segment during a playback interval of a duration, for example, equal to a playback time of a segment.

A system and method for providing secure authorization to an electronic device by combining two or more security features of authentication processed at substantially the same time where at least one of the factors is a “tolerant” factor. By combining two factors such as facial recognition and a screen gesture, these can be analyzed at substantially the same time such that the tolerance match required by the tolerant factors for providing a better user authentication experience without reducing the overall security accuracy.

A weather alert system to warn a user when an emergency signal has been broadcast and to simultaneously activate a television or other visual information source and to select a predetermined informational channel. The weather alert system includes a signal detector for detecting a broadcast alarm signal and for generating an activation signal upon detection of the alarm signal. A remote controller is operatively connected to the signal detector for producing a remote control signal in response to said activation signal. The remote control signal is utilized to trigger the activation of a visual information source such as a television or a computer to provide visual information relating to the hazardous condition.

A communication system includes a transmitter and a receiver. This invention describes how a panoramic view can be created in real-time using multiple ordinary video cameras by splicing the video frames in real-time. It also describes how a subset of that panoramic view can be viewed on customer screen and how a customer can smoothly shift and scroll or zoom the customer view in real-time to view the other parts of the panoramic view using a remote control device. This invention also describes how all this can be achieved economically by using a cloud service such as assigning a Virtual Machine to each customer and using hardware acceleration engines in the data center such as high-end video cards.

A video recording and playback device (10) incorporates a processor (114) for processing the video signal to detect the presence of commercial messages. Video and audio event detectors (102, 104) detect the presence of events in the signal as it is recorded. Automatically detect and track a user selected object, such as a face, in the images. And, automatically modify the video data, by reserving a user selected area of the displayed images for displaying the tracked object as a separate video tile within the scene. The separate video tile remains in the selected area despite movement of the camera relative to the scene, or movement of the user relative to the object or the scene.

Techniques are disclosed for normalizing and publishing alerts using a behavioral recognition-based video surveillance system configured with an alert normalization module. Certain embodiments allow a user of the behavioral recognition system to provide the normalization module with a set of relative weights for alert types and a maximum publication value. Using these values, the normalization module evaluates an alert and determines whether its rareness value exceed a threshold. Upon determining that the alert exceeds the threshold, the module normalizes and publishes the alert.

Disclosed is a system and method for recognizing a parking space line marking for a vehicle. In particular, a corner capturing process is configured to capture an angled corner in an image including the parking space line marking, and a cross capturing process is configured to capture a cross point by combining adjacent corners among the captured corners. A space capturing process captures a space which is an end periphery of the parking space line marking by combining the captured cross points. As a result of the above processes, a type selecting process can then select a type of the parking space line marking from the captured space, and a final selection process may select a final space based on the selected type.
