Embodiment 1

[0042] Embodiment 1: silver nitrate coating solution

[0043] Coating solutions containing silver nitrate were prepared using the following procedure in a solution of polyethylene oxide (PEO), polyisocyanate, polyol, and water in methylene chloride. First, a 1.08% solution of PEO (Polyox N750, Dow Chemical) was prepared by adding 5.5 g of PEO, 1.761 g of polyol (P12, Caschem Chemical) and 0.15 g of deionized water (300 ppm, based on solution weight) to 500 g of dichloromethane and stirred overnight to dissolve the PEO. Then, 3.52 grams of silver nitrate (29%, based on the weight of solids in the coating) was added to the coating solution and stirring was continued for 3 days. The solution was then filtered through a 100 micron bag filter to remove excess undissolved silver nitrate. Subsequently, 1.349 g of polyisocyanate (Desmodur L67MPA / X, Bayer Chemical) were added to the solution and stirring was continued for 1 hour.

Embodiment 2

[0044] Example 2: Coated Silicone Foley Catheters

[0045] Silicone Foley catheters were first primed with a silicone-polyurethane copolymer (preparation described in U.S. 6,329,488) and dried in an oven at 60°C for 15 minutes prior to coating with the silver nitrate coating solution from Example 1 . The primed catheters were then coated with the coating solution from Example 1 by dip-coating the catheters in the coating solution at an entry rate of 40 ipm with no retention in solution and an exit rate of 15 ipm. The catheters were then air dried for approximately 15 minutes and finally oven dried at 60° C. for 30 minutes. The silver concentration of the resulting coated catheter was 16.46 μg / cm 2 .

Embodiment 3

[0046] Embodiment 3: silver acetate coating solution

[0047] Prospective Example: A coating can be prepared as in Example 1 above, except that instead of adding 3.52 grams of silver nitrate to the coating solution, 1.52 grams of silver acetate (15%, based on the weight of solids in the coating) is added to the coating solution. liquid.

Abstract

Described herein are coatings containing water-soluble oligodynamic metal salts that are formulated and applied from hydrophobic solvents In particular, articles of manufacture comprising polymer coatings containing oligodynamic metal salts can include hydrophobic polymer coatings made from water-reactive monomers and hydrophilic polymers compounded in hydrophobic solvents which contain a small amount of water that aids in the solubilization and suspension of the oligodynamic metal salts Methods of preparing these antimicrobial polymer coatings, and methods of coating a substrate to produce an article of manufacture having an antimicrobial polymer coating are also described.

Description

[0001] This application claims priority to US Provisional Application 60 / 778758, filed March 3, 2006, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. Background technique [0002] Some metals including silver and silver salts are used in the medical field as antimicrobial agents. For example, silver in the form of metals, salts, colloids and complexes has been used to prevent and control infections involving the use of medical devices. Silver has been deposited directly on the device surface, distributed within the device material or made into a coating and deposited on the device. Many other metals, including gold, zinc, copper, and platinum, have been found to have antimicrobial properties, either by themselves or in combination with silver. These and other metals have been shown to provide antimicrobial behavior even in trace amounts, a property known as "oligodynamic". [0003] Fretting metals have been used in medical devices such as cathete...
