Embodiment 1

[0015] Example 1 Preparation of 3,4-bis(4-bromophenyl)-3-cyclobutene-1,2-dione

[0016] 3,4-bis(4-bromophenyl)-3-cyclobutene-1,2-dione was prepared according to the method disclosed in Polymer Bulletin, 1999, 42, 183-190. In a 100 ml three-necked flask, 3.04 g (26.6 mmol) of squaraine, 6.42 g (54.0 mmol) of thionyl chloride and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) (catalytic amount) were added. Heat the reaction mixture to about 65°C and react for about 2 hours. Cool the reaction solution, then add 20 ml of bromobenzene and 8.5 g (63.8 mmol) of anhydrous aluminum trichloride to the mixture, and react at room temperature for about 30 hours. The mixture was poured into 20 ml of water, extracted with ethyl acetate, the extract was dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, and the solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure to obtain a crude product. The pure product was obtained by recrystallization from ethanol (melting point: 172°C, yield: 46%).
