Example Embodiment

[0041] Example 1

[0042] The typical formulation of the pressure-sensitive adhesive of the present invention is as follows:

[0043] Component

[0044] * Hitenol BC-10 is a poly(oxy-1,2-ethanediyl), α-sulfo-ω-(4-nonyl-2-(1-propenyl)phenoxy provided by Montello, Tulsa, OK Base) branched ammonium salt; yellow-brown viscous liquid, 97.0% active substance, combined sulfuric acid content of 8.70-9.70%, pH value of 6.5-8.5 (1% solution).

[0045] The typical synthesis instructions are as follows:

[0046] Preparation of pre-emulsion

[0047] Add deionized water (64.8 g), sodium bicarbonate (0.4 g), and 70% tert-butyl hydroperoxide initiator (t-BHP, 0.60 g) into a 500 ml pre-emulsification container with a turbo agitator. And Hitenol BC-10 polymerizable anionic surfactant (3.6 g). Adjust the stirring speed to 400 rpm. Then the monomer consisting of β-carboxyethyl acrylate (β-CEA, 10.0 g), methacrylic acid (MAA, 2.0 g), methyl methacrylate (MMA, 15.33 g) and styrene (30.65 g) T...

[0069] Example 12

[0070] Add deionized water (462.0 g) and Hitenol BC-10 to a 2000 ml four-neck jacketed glass reactor equipped with a turbo agitator, thermocouple, circulating water bath, nitrogen bubbling, pre-emulsion and reducing agent delivery lines. Polymerized surfactant (3.60 g). Start nitrogen bubbling, set the stirring speed at 200 rpm, and turn on the circulating water bath. A monomer mixture consisting of 33.7 grams of carboxyethyl acrylate, 0.2 grams of methacrylic acid, 475.0 grams of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, and 132.0 grams of styrene was added to the mixture containing 1.3 grams of sodium bicarbonate and 1.9 grams of 70% tert-butyl acrylate. Base hydrogen peroxide initiator and 14.6 grams Hitenol BC-10 polymerizable anionic surfactant in 217.1 grams of water, and stirred for a long enough time until a stable pre-emulsion raw material is formed. Separately, a reducing agent raw material containing 1.2 g of zinc formaldehyde sulfoxylate in 42 g of water was prepared ...

Example Embodiment

[0071] Example 13

[0072] Example 12 was repeated, except that the pre-emulsion mixture contained 0.2 g of n-dodecyl mercaptan.

Abstract

An aqueous, blush-retardant pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) is made from an aqueous latex emulsion having an average particle size diameter of not substantially above about 100 nm and emulsified in the presence of an emulsifier consisting essentially of: Formula (I) wherein n is an integer ranging from 1-200.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to pressure sensitive adhesives based on aqueous latex emulsions and to a process for preparing the adhesives. The pressure sensitive adhesives prepared according to the present invention have an average particle size of less than or equal to about 100 nanometers and a narrow particle size distribution. These pressure sensitive adhesives are particularly suitable for those applications that require the pressure sensitive adhesive to maintain adhesion between the substrate and facestock when exposed to hot water sprays and immersion in hot water. Also, these adhesives exhibit water blush resistance or "blush resistance," which is typically measured by cold or ice water immersion tests. Hot water adhesion is required in applications such as bottle labels exposed to hot water spray during laundering operations. In general, water whitening resistance is required wherever a pressure sensitive adhesive with a transparent facesto...
