Cell-Downgrading and Reference-Voltage Adjustment for a Multi-Bit-Cell Flash Memory

A flash memory has multi-level cells (MLC) that can each store multiple bits per cell. Blocks of cells can be downgraded to fewer bits / cell when errors occur, or for storing critical data such as boot code. The bits from a single MLC are partitioned among multiple pages to improve error correctability using Error Correction Code (ECC). An upper reference voltage is generated by a voltage reference generator in response to calibration registers that can be programmed to alter the upper reference voltage. A series of decreasing references are generated from the upper reference voltage and are compared to a bit-line voltage. Compare results are translated by translation logic that generates read data and over- and under-programming signals. Downgraded cells use the same truth table but generate fewer read data bits. Noise margins are asymmetrically improved by using the same sub-states for reading downgraded and full-density MLC cells.

A method and system for supporting a compliance agent in compliance monitoring for anomaly detection (CMAD) involves a primary monitoring system comparing some predetermined conditions of acceptance with the actual data or event. If any variance is detected (an anomaly) by the primary monitoring system, an exception report or alert is produced, identifying the variance. In a simple environment, this identification of the variance fulfils the evidence conditions and determines an instance of non-compliance. However, in a more complex environment, it may only be an indicator of a suspect non-compliant event (SNCE). In the latter case, the compliance agent uses the results of the initial monitoring as well as important information related to the event and requiring judgmental expertise to obtain further evidence of non-compliance. Compliance gents develop propositions or believes, based on their assumption. For each proposition node in the system, the assumption based truth maintenance system maintains a list of minimum sets of assumptions (Boolean cues), which are relevant to the SNCE type. At the macro level, the construct uses the trivalent belief-disbelief-unknown. However, this is refined by applying a measure of importance to individual pieces or empirical evidence.

Database query optimization apparatus and method

A database query optimizer processes an expression in a database query, and generates therefrom an operand list and a corresponding truth table that may be represented by a list of binary characters, where the operand list and corresponding truth table represent a disjunct normal form for the expression. Each expression is stored once it is processed into its operand list and corresponding list of binary characters. New queries are processed into component expressions, and each expression is checked to see if the expression was previously processed and stored as a processed expression. If so, the operand list and list of binary characters for the previously-stored expression may be used in processing the current expression. If there is no previously-stored expression that corresponds to the current expression, the previously-stored expressions are checked to see if any correspond to a complement of the current expression. If so, a new expression is easily constructed for the current expression by retrieving the list of binary characters that correspond to the complement expression, and inverting the bits in the list of binary characters. If there is no previously-stored expression that corresponds to the current expression or its complement, an operand list and corresponding list of binary characters are generated for the current expression. Logical operations between predicates in a query may be performed by performing mathematical operations on the lists of binary characters corresponding to each predicate expression. The end result is an operand list and corresponding list of binary characters that represents the entire expression in a query.

A system and method provides investors with meaningful information extracted from large volumes of available data for a particular stock, mutual fund, bond, or other investment. The system includes one or more computers that receive and process multiple data feeds to extract information relating to each type of investment. The processed data is compared to “alert rules” each corresponding to a predefined condition, and a truth table is established that identifies alerts that are true for each particular investment. An investor logs onto a web site and enters a stock ticker symbol or similar investment identifier. Computer software displays a web page including “alerts” that are presently true for that particular investment. A post processing module converts each counter-example into an error message that includes a program trace when the counter-example identifies one or more of the flow control labels.

A system and method for product configuration represents a product using a configuration model having numerical clauses. Features of the product are associated with literals in the numerical clauses. The numerical clauses may specify a number of literals to determine whether the numerical clause is satisfied, satisfiable, or unsatisfiable. Numerical clauses represent constraints that govern the configuration of the product. Resolving numerical clauses and user choices involves one or more inference procedures. In one embodiment, unit clauses represent user choices, and a configuration engine asserts the unit clause and performs numerical unit resolution between the unit clause and all numerical clauses containing the complement (generally a negation) of the unit clause. Complementary literals are eliminated from the current state of the configuration model. In one embodiment, if the uneliminated literals in a numerical clause causes the clause to be satisfied, the uneliminated literals are recursively asserted. The configuration engine then performs numerical unit resolution between the recursively asserted, uneliminated literals and numerical clauses containing the complements of the uneliminated literals. Numerical clauses may also function as literals. Numerical clauses may include negations of consumer literals and positive provider literals. If a user chooses a consumer feature, by knowing the consumer and provider weights, the configuration engine can determine which provider literals should be included, excluded, or remain selectable. Embodiments of the invention can implement a logic-based truth maintenance system and numerical unit resolution.
