A fabric seat for a chair and a method and machine for manufacturing the fabric seat. The fabric seat comprises a seat frame that supports the outer circumference of a fabric material. The seat frame comprises grasping members that secure the fabric to the seat frame and retain the desired stretch in the fabric. The grasping members can be teeth. A cover is also provided, which is snapped onto the circumference of the seat frame, to trap the fabric and protect the user from the grasping members.

Preferably, the seat assembly is a one piece molded plastic shell having a flexible intermediate portion interconnecting the seat bottom and seat back. In one embodiment of the invention, the chair can be provided with legs to enable stacking of the chairs.

A chair is provided comprising a seat assembly including a seat back and a seat bottom and a support frame including a left leg assembly and right leg assembly connected by a transverse support member. The seat back is pivotably connected to each of the leg assemblies such that an upper portion of the seat back pivots in relation to the leg assemblies between a first seat back position and a second seat back position. The seat bottom is rotatable in relation to the seat back between an upright position and a horizontal position. The seat bottom is slidingly engaged with the leg assemblies such that pivoting of the seat backward from the first seat back position to the second seat back position causes the seat bottom to slide forward from a first seat bottom position to a second seat bottom position.

A stackable chair that is capable of being ganged with a further like chair in side-by-side relationship, including an upper frame adapted to receive and support a seating platform, and a backrest platform for supporting a user seated on the chair. The upper frame is attached to a lower frame having a left and right sides, each said having a pair of leg members connected underneath the lower frame, each of the leg members having a lower end to engage the supporting surface for the chair, and having an upper end. A left side and a right side coupling support extend respectively on top of left and right frame members. The left side coupling support includes a left extension having a coupling hook extending outward. The right side coupling support includes a right extension having a lower surface enclosing a downward opening slot aligned parallel with the right side frame member. In a ganged setup, the left coupling hook of one chair is insertable into the right slot of the second chair of a like chair. The ganged chairs, when disassembled, can be stacked vertically for ease of transfer. The chairs provide rigid connections and compact configurations when ganged or stacked.
