A combination mouth and nasal mask (40) for assisted respiration or CPAP is disclosed. The combination mask (40) has a frame (42) to the rear side of which is mounted a separate nasal cushion (44) and mouth cushion (46). Both the nasal cushion (44) and the mouth cushion (46) separately form a rolled edge seal around the patient's face in the vicinity of the nose and in the vicinity of the lips. Inlet air is communicated from within the housing (48) to the mouth chamber, circumscribed by the mouth cushion (46) by means of one or more interconnecting tubes (62). The proportion of air communicated to the mouth chamber (48) is controlled by the sizing and number of the tube(s), thus providing for free flow of air, restricted flow of air and pressure equalization, or zero flow of air. A nasal CPAP treatment apparatus is disclosed with a flow generator coupled to a nasal mask. The mask has a nasal cushion forming a nose-receiving cavity. The cushion has a triangularly-shaped frame of resilient material with a mask engaging portion connected by a side wall to a face engaging portion which has a nasal bridge region, a cheek region and a lip region. The cushion may have a portion of the side wall in the nasal bridge region being other than straight to provide an improved sealing in the nasal bridge region. A plurality of membranes, preferably three, of resilient material extend substantially around the triangularly-shaped frame. Some of the membranes are thicker in the lip region than in the nasal bridge region to improve fit of the cushion in use.

Apparatus for fitting to the head of a patient for supply of gas to the nose at a positive pressure for treatment of snoring and sleep apnea comprises headgear for fitting to the head of a patient. A mask support forms part of said headgear and is held, in use, by portions of said headgear in a stable position above the nose of the patient. The mask support includes a manifold chamber, a first connector opening above said manifold chamber for attachment of a gas supply line and a second connector depending from said manifold chamber. The above apparatus may be used with a novel nasal mask which is a nares seal that may be removably connected to said second connector by a third connector forming part of said seal and having an air orifice formed therethrough. The seal further comprises first and second laterally spaced delivery tubes connecting with said air orifice and defining between them a generally triangular open space which extends, when in use, downwardly to a point below the nose of a patient. The delivery tubes thence curves inwardly and upwardly to approach the nose of a patient and supports first and second nostril tubes connected with said delivery tubes for insertion into the nares of a patient. Wire support for said laterally spaced tubes extends from the connector to about where said tubes curve inwardly and upwardly.

A user interface for a portable continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device comprises a gas delivery member releasably mountable to a manifold member. The CPAP device comprises a motor blower unit contained in a wearable vest which is connectable by a patient hose to the user interface. Alternative embodiments of the gas delivery member include a nasal mask or a pair of nasal prongs which are interchangeably mountable to the manifold member. Ball joints on opposing ends of the patient hose swivelably interconnect the patient hose to the user interface and to the motor blower unit. A nasal assembly for delivering breathable gas to a patient includes a frame having lateral connector, a cushion with a pair of nozzles, and a clip to secure the cushion to the frame. The frame includes a vent channel and a plurality of vent holes. The frame/cushion includes structure (lugs/cut outs) to prevent the assembly of an unvented frame with an unvented cushion, for safety purposes. The frame includes cored portions that interface with corner lugs provided on the cushion. A patient interface includes a frame, a cushion (nasal mask, nasal-oro mask, nozzles, etc.) and a vent assembly including a pattern of vent holes including at least two rows.

Methods and devices are provided that are effective to remove an obstruction in a human airway and/or maintain an open airway. The methods and devices are particularly useful for patients suffering from snoring and/or OSA, and/or preventing upper airway obstructions in patients undergoing anesthesia. In one embodiment, the device includes a mouthpiece that is adapted to form a substantially sealed cavity within a human mouth, and a hollow elongate member having a first end that is coupled to the mouthpiece and that is in communication with the substantially sealed cavity, and a second end that is adapted to be coupled to a negative pressure generator. In use, a negative pressure generator can be attached to the hollow elongate member to create a negative pressure in a human mouth in response to an obstructed airway, thereby removing the obstruction. In particular, this device is effective to counteract the collapse of a patient's soft tissues of the upper airway to reopen the airway. The mouthpiece can also be used in combination with a nasal mask. In another embodiment, the oral appliance above also comprises a nasal mask, wherein the nasal mask provides a means of ventilation support, including but not limited to total mechanical ventilation, positive-end expiratory pressure, or continuous positive airway pressure. In use, such a device can provide complete patient ventilation and maintain an open upper airway.

A nasal mask assembly that includes a seal member defined from a unitary piece of elastomeric material. The seal member defines a nose receiving cavity and has a first end portion and a second end portion generally opposite the first end portion. A first opening in the first end portion allows at least a portion of a nose to enter the nose receiving cavity such that the nares of the patient communicate with the nose receiving cavity. The seal member includes a neck portion defined in the second end portion and a second opening defined in the neck portion in communication with the nose receiving cavity. A system is disclosed comprising a high pressure gases source: for example a compressor, a low cross section conduit adapted to convey gases from the compressor, and a patient interface delivering gases to the patient. The patient interface includes valve member which is substantially closed during inspiration and venting externally during expiration.
