Microwave extraction of essential oils

A method of extracting an essential oil from plant matter, starting with providing plant matter to an interior of an extraction vessel, wherein the plant matter includes at least one essential oil. Next, at least one vacuum pump is used to reduce the pressure within the interior of the extraction vessel with the plant matter therein to an absolute pressure of less than 400 mm Hg absolute pressure. Microwave energy is applied to the plant matter while the interior of the extraction vessel is under the reduced pressure, thereby forming a vapor including at least a portion of the essential oil. The vapor is directed from the extraction vessel to at least one condenser vessel. Finally, the vapor is condensed to a liquid state such that the vapor includes at least a portion of the essential oil, by utilizing the at least one condenser vessel.

Systems and methods for spectral analysis of plants

Systems and methods for hyperspectral imaging of plants are provided. Multispectral images of plants are transformed, e.g. by interpolation along a spectral axis, to generate hyperspectral images of plants. The transformation can be based on spectral bases formed from hyperspectral sample images including images of plant matter. Plant characteristics, such as plant health, may be predicted based on the hyperspectral image. Plant health may be predicted by comparing derivatives of reflectance values with respect to wavelength for a plant of a given image relative to a reference derivative based on a reference hyperspectral image. The derivatives may be compared by determining a regression loss.

Autothermal liquefaction of waste materials.

Waste streams of organic matter, such as sewage, plant matter, and plastic materials, are accepted for recycling and treated at elevated temperatures and pressures to produce useful organic products, such as bio-oil and gas. By-products, such as an aqueous phase containing char and water, can be selectively recycled or disposed of as is. An oxidant added to a reactor containing waste from the waste stream promotes an autothermal reaction under the temperature and pressure applied to the reactor, slightly boosting the temperature from the reaction therein. The reactor produces useful hydrocarbons, such as bio-oil, resulting from the breaking of organic bonds. The combination of oxidation and radical initiation resulting from the oxidant provides an increased yield of bio-oil while reducing char compared to temperature and pressure alone. A stoichiometric amount of oxidant limits the complete conversion of carbon to carbon dioxide by limiting available oxygen and thus promoting hydrocarbon formation.
