The present invention is an apparatus for equipping a surgical stapling device with a surgical buttress in order to provide reinforced surgical fastener suture lines and includes means for aligning the apparatus with the surgical staple device, an elastomeric foam surgical buttress contained within the alignment means and means for retaining the foam buttress within the alignment means, which alignment means is formed as a unitary body containing a frame, guide channel walls and means for receiving the elastomeric foam surgical buttress.

Articles are provided having no orientation or a multi-directional orientation. A tissue fastening device includes a suture clip holder and a suture cutter. A suture clip can be releasably secured to the suture clip holder, and a suture line or lines can pass through the clip and adjacent the suture cutter. A first movement of a control handle causes the suture clip to be released from the suture clip holder, and a second movement of the control handle causes the suture cutter to cut the suture line or lines. The first movement is different from the second movement. The first movement can be rotational, with the second movement being longitudinal. The invention is an apparatus, system, and method for repairing heart valves. A suture line is secured to a papillary muscle, and then passed through a portion of a heart valve leaflet. A reference element is provided at a desired distance from a plane defined by the heart valve annulus. The suture line is secured to the heart valve leaflet at a position adjacent the reference element. The reference element may part of a device configured for placement on or in a heart valve annulus. The reference element may be slidingly secured to the device so that the distance of the reference element from the main body of the device can be varied by a surgeon or other user. The reference element may be a line of suture, which may be pre-installed during manufacture of the device or may be installed by the surgeon or other user.

An endovascular surgical device is disclosed for attaching an endovascular prosthesis to a vascular wall. The device includes a tubular member and an applicator device. The tubular member has longitudinal bands separated by slots that are configured to expand upon being placed in compression. The applicator device has a distal end with a rotary head for applying sutures. A portion of the suture is at least partially positioned in the rotary head. A method is described that includes positioning a prosthesis and an endovascular device within a portion of vascular wall that requires reinforcing or repairing. The tubular part is expanded, forcing the prosthesis and vascular wall to expand. The applicator device applies the suture to attach the prosthesis to the vascular wall. Additional sutures can be applied by removing the applicator device, attaching a second suture and repositioning the applicator device to attach a second suture.

An adjustable implantable medical device and adjustment device are described. In some embodiments, the adjustment device includes a lead with a distal end modified to permit better engagement and securement to the described implantable devices. In some embodiments, the contact of the lead is bent. Some embodiments include a coil that engages and secures the lead to the implantable device. Some embodiments include a suture line to aid in securing the lead to the implantable device.

A suture passing device includes a jaw assembly that is moved to an open configuration after exiting a hollow needle distal tip and moved to a closed configuration when retracted into the needle tip. The jaw assembly may include a pair of jaw members biased to a default diverging configuration. A suture capturing mechanism formed on the jaw members securely captures suture to both push and pull the captured when the jaw assembly is retracted into the hollow distal tip. The device may also include a second suture capturing mechanism that loosely captures suture and enables the captured suture to slide.

A surgical suturing device (10) having an axis extending between a proximal end and a distal end is operable to move a suture (32) through body tissue (34). A handle assembly (110) is coupled to an elongated shaft (14) having a hollow configuration. An actuating rod (16) is disposed to extend between the handle assembly (110) and the shaft (14). A thumb actuation assembly is coupled to a proximal end of the actuating rod (16) for moving the rod both axially and rotationally. A needle assembly (2) at the distal end of the actuating rod (16) is movable with the actuating rod (16) between an extended state and a retracted state and at various angular orientations. Bifurcated portions (24, 26) of the needle assembly (20) define a suture slot (28), the bifurcated portions having a proximate relationship when the needle assembly (20) is in the retracted state and having a separated relationship when the needle assembly (20) is in the extended state. The needle assembly (20) is biased to the retracted state and the bifurcated portions (24, 26) are biased to the separated relationship. A handle assembly (110) is operable to move the needle assembly (20) between a free suture state and a captured suture state. In an associated method of use, the needle is bifurcated to form at least one pair of arms (24, 26 or 26b, 38b) to define a suture slot (28).

A suture passer comprising:

  • first and second jaw members mounted to the distal end of the shaft, the first jaw member having a suture support for supporting a length of suture;
  • a pitch adjustment mechanism for adjusting the pitch of the first and second jaw members relative to the shaft;
  • a lever mechanism for opening and closing the first and second jaw members relative to one another; and
  • a needle mechanism for selectively urging a needle having a groove therein so that the groove in the needle can engage a length of suture supported by the suture support.

An apparatus and method for repairing septal defects includes advancing a catheter to the site of the defect, grasping opposing edges of the defect, passing one or more suture lines through the opposing edges, and tightening the suture lines. The catheter can include one or more vacuum ports, with the vacuum ports being sized and configured to grasp opposing edges of the defect when vacuum is applied thereto. The vacuum ports may be positioned longitudinally distant from each other along the catheter, and may also be on different sides of the catheter. The vacuum ports may have vacuum applied via independent control. The catheter can also include suture deploying structure that prevents the suture line from becoming entangled in the catheter.
