Real time production system and method

An integrated, fully automated video production system that provides a video director with total control over all of the video production devices used in producing a show. Such devices include, but are not limited to, cameras, robotic pan / tilt heads, video tape players and recorders (VTRs), video servers and virtual recorders, character generators, still stores, digital video disk players (DVDs), audio mixers, digital video effects (DVE), video switchers, and teleprompting systems. The video production system provides an automation capability that allows the video director to pre-produce a show, review the show in advance of “air time,” and then, with a touch of a button, produce the live show. In one embodiment, the invention provides a video production system having a processing unit in communication with one or more of the video production devices mentioned above. The processing unit displays on a monitor graphical controls for controlling the variety of video production devices that it is in communication with. A video director uses a keyboard and mouse that are interfaced with the processing unit to activate the graphical controls, and thereby remotely control the video production devices from one location. The processing unit also enables the video director to automate the production of a show. According to one embodiment, the video director pre-produces the show, defines a set of video production commands or instructions (hereafter “transition macro”) to be executed by the processing unit, and then, by activating a control button displayed by the processing unit, the video director instructs the processing unit to execute the transition macro. Each video production command in a transition macro directs the processing unit to transmit in series and / or parallel one or more control commands to one or more of the video production devices when required.

Digital video and data recorder

A “pause and resume” function and a “channel change” function for recording and playing interframe compressed audiovideo data, particularly MPEG data. The invention includes a digital track format and a method for recording one or more sessions from one or more streams of interframe compressed audiovideo data which has been synchronized to a reference clock. The invention adds special “splice point” indicators to recorded video material. The splice point indicators are added either periodically (e.g., by recording a special reference clock) or when a discontinuity occurs in recording audiovideo data streams. Splice point indicators are used to determine the existence of a point of discontinuity in the recorded audiovideo data. The system and method enable pausing and later resuming recording of an audiovideo data stream such that the audiovideo data can be played back with proper resynchronization at each point of discontinuity (the “pause and resume” function). The format and method also allow for recording an abrupt change from one audiovideo data stream to a different audiovideo data stream having a different clock reference, such that the two recorded sequences are spliced together as one continuous recorded sequence that can be played back with resynchronization of the program audiovideo data at each splice point (the “channel change” function). As a consequence of using an added special reference clock as a splice point indicator, the invention also provides random access playback. In addition, the invention permits recording of conventional data in standard storage formats.

The present invention is a dubbing device for dubbing data from a portable first recording medium such as a CD-DA (compact disc digital audio) to a second recording medium such as a hard disk drive (HDD), in which dubbing to the second recording medium with a large capacity is automatically carried out when reproducing data from the first recording medium.
