Problems solved by technology

Since analog circuits are not formed from truly independent blocks, changing one block of analog logic can force changes to every other block in the circuit
Furthermore, improvements in process technology occur so rapidly that application-specific designs often become obsolete before they are manufactured
Ultimately, analog circuits are neither fully reconfigurable nor fully programmable

Embodiment Construction

[0034] A description of example embodiments of the invention follows.

[0035] Wideband Signal Processing (WiSP) is an analog signal processing technique; that is, it implements programmable and executable analog computations over a bandwidth ranging from 50MHz to 20GHz or more. The fundamental basis of WiSP is the state variable theory which, when combined with CMOS deep sub-micron technology, enables low-frequency signal processing techniques to be applied to micron and millimeter wavelengths. WiSP can be realized by complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS), silicon-germanium (SiGe) technologies, and silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technologies.

[0036] Since the parameters of the state-variable machine can be set to 10-bit precision, WiSP has high precision. WiSP is also frequency agile (frequencyagile) and can span the entire frequency band as state-variable parameters (such as gain) are changed. For example, a state variable machine centered at a frequency of about 1 ...

Abstract

Wideband analog radios are the building blocks that can be used to create scalable analog signal processors that operate in bandwidths from 50MHz to 20GHz or more. Example devices include integrators (transconductors), digitally controlled attenuators, buffers, and scalable adders implemented using deep submicron CMOS technology. Since the device is implemented in CMOS, the ratio of trace / element size to signal wavelength is about the same as that of a low frequency device implemented on a printed circuit board. Combining this scalability with high gain / high bandwidth enables feedback and programmability for wideband analog signal processing.

Description

[0001] related application [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Patent Application No. 61 / 359108, filed June 28, 2010, and US Provisional Patent Application No. 61 / 304064, filed February 12, 2010. The entire teaching of the above application is hereby incorporated by reference. [0003] governmental support [0004] This invention is supported, in whole or in part, by the United States Military under Contract No. W911NF-08-C-0085. The Government has certain rights in this invention. Background technique [0005] Increases in signal bandwidth and data rates have spurred the development of new signal processing techniques to address the challenges associated with wideband signals. The increase in signal bandwidth also enables new applications, including active radio frequency (RF) identification (ID) based on ultra-wideband (UWB) technology in heterogeneous environments. In addition, increased signal bandwidth improves ranging accuracy, making wideband...
