Problems solved by technology

While polyoxyalkylene aliphatic amine-based builders have excellent surfactant properties and often enhance the potency of phytotoxins such as glyphosate, unfortunately they are eye irritants and must be used with a high degree of caution

[0030] Toxicology Test Results

[0031] According to the following test scheme, compare the formulation containing 480g / L (41% by weight) of glyphosate isopropylamine salt and 180g / L (15.3% by weight) of the adjuvant (sample A) of Example 1 and glyphosate commodity. This formulation (sample A) contained about 0.36% by weight citric acid. Two kinds of ROUNDUP  Both contain isopropylammonium salt of glyphosate and ethoxylated tallowamine.

Embodiment 3

[0042] The post-emergence herbicidal efficacy of the composition of Example 2 (sample A) was evaluated according to the following scheme:

[0043] Weed species: barnyardgrass (ECHCG), giant foxtail (SETFA), foxtail (SETVI), crabgrass (DIGSA), wild oats (AVEFA), Johnson grass (SORHA), creeping icegrass (AGRRE), morning glory (IPOHE ), amaranth (AMARE), velvetleaf (ABUTH), American cocklebur (XANST) and Chenopodium (CHEAL), chicory (SONAR), Canadian thistle (CIRAR), cassia obtuse leaf (CASOB) and wildpoinsettia ( EPHHL).

[0044] Plants were grown in a synthetic soil mixture containing micronutrients (Metro-mix, produced by O.M. Scott Co.) under greenhouse conditions supplemented by halide lamps with an average energy of 165 micromoles per second per square meter. Light is provided, the daytime temperature is 29.4°C, and the relative humidity is 73.7%. The light period is 16 hours during the day and 8 hours at night. All plants were top watered before treatment and subsurface...

Abstract

An adjuvant composition for pesticide formulations which exhibits reduced eye irritancy is comprised of a polyoxyalkylene aliphatic amine containing at least about 2 moles of an alkylene oxide group and an eye irritation reducing compound which simultaneously reduces the eye irritation caused by the polyoxyalkylene aliphatic amine and which complexes with metal ions such as calcium and iron which may be present in an aqueous solution of the adjuvant and a pesticide or a plant growth regulator. The eye irritation reducing compound is a carboxylic acid that is capable of complexing with or forming chelates with metal ions in aqueous solution while simultaneously reducing the eye irritation caused by the polyoxyalkylene aliphatic amine. The adjuvant also contains a mixture of polyhydric alcohols and, optionally, a defoamer. The adjuvant is particularly in N-phosphonomethylglycine (glyphosate) herbicidal formulations.

Description

Background of the invention [0001] Insecticides, insect repellents, fungicides, bactericides, bacteriostats, herbicides, and plant growth regulators are generally formulated into various products for crop control of insects, weeds, etc. Alternatively, these products can be formulated as liquids or powders or granules. Solvents, emulsifiers, dispersants and wetting agents are generally added to such compositions to ensure a uniform pesticide formulation. [0002] These formulation ingredients are also selected to ensure that the pesticide composition is uniformly dispersed or emulsified in the tank mix at the time of application. Yet a third purpose is to ensure optimal delivery of the tank mix to the target pest or substrate. Sometimes when the tank mix contains multiple ingredients, the pesticide formulation does not contain enough surfactants to ensure a stable tank mix. Likewise, in order to obtain sufficient stability, adjuvants must be added to the tank mix. Chemicall...
