92 results about "Generic Access Network" patented technology

Generic Access Network (GAN) is a protocol that extends mobile voice, data and multimedia (IP Multimedia Subsystem/Session Initiation Protocol (IMS/SIP)) applications over IP networks. Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) is the commercial name used by mobile carriers for external IP access into their core networks. The latest generation system is named Wi-Fi Calling or VoWiFi by a number of handset manufacturers, including Apple and Samsung, a move that is being mirrored by carriers like T-Mobile US and Vodafone. The service is dependent on IMS, IPsec and ePDG.

Generic Access to the Iu Interface

Some embodiments provide a method of registering a user equipment (UE) in a communication system that includes a licensed wireless communication system and a generic access network (GAN) that has a generic access network controller (GANC). The method sends a register request message from the UE to the GANC that indicates a GAN mode capability of A / Gb only for the UE. When the GANC has a GAN mode capability of A / Gb, the GANC registers the UE with the GAN. When the GANC has a GAN mode capability of Iu only, the GANC rejects the register request message. When the GANC has a GAN mode capability of both A / Gb and Iu, the GANC registers the UE based on a set of GANC mode selection rules that the GANC applies for registering UEs with the GAN.

Generic Access to the Iu Interface

Some embodiments provide a method and technique for explicitly indicating the start of a communication session within an Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) network or Generic Access Network (GAN). To facilitate the explicit indication of the start of the communication session, some embodiments replace the first DIRECT TRANSFER message exchanged between a user equipment (UE) and network controller of the UMA network or GAN with a new message, the GA-RRC INITIAL DIRECT TRANSFER message. Some embodiments also provide a method and technique to activate a communication channel prior to performing handover from a first licensed wireless communication network to the UMA network or GAN. In this manner, some embodiments perform a more efficient and seamless handover from the licensed wireless network as the delay resulting from the handover is minimized by performing the channel activation procedure prior to the handover.

Access control in a mobile communication system

A method and radio network controller (RNC) in a radio access network (RAN) for controlling access to a cellular telecommunication system. Upon receiving an access request from a given user equipment (UE) through a given radio base station (RBS), the RNC retrieves authorization information from an access control database within the RAN. The authorization information indicates whether the given UE is authorized to access the system through the given RBS. The RNC alternatively grants access or denies access to the UE based on the retrieved authorization information. The RBS is particularly useful for controlling access through small cells with limited capacity.

System and method of supporting packet-switched handover

A system and method of supporting packet-switched handover of a mobile station (MS) from a GERAN / UTRAN cell to a Generic Access Network (GAN) cell within a GAN. If the MS is within coverage of the GAN cell, the MS registers within the GAN triggering initiation of the packet-switched handover from the GERAN / UTRAN cell to the GAN cell. A preparation phase is then conducted for executing the packet-switched handover. The preparation phase includes identifying the MS context as part of the preparation phase and activating the GA-PSR TC towards the MS. Next, the packet-switched handover is executed, resulting in the MS switching to GAN mode. The MS then begins transferring packets via the GAN cell. The system and method also supports a packet-switched handover from the GAN cell to the GERAN / UTRAN cell.

System and method for generic access network registration by a mobile station during network congestion

Systems and methods for providing mobile stations (“MS”) registration to a generic access network (“GAN”) via a wireless LAN interface are disclosed. The MS may receive a rejection message from a GAN controller with a “network congestion” indication set. The MS may also receive a “connection status” information element as part of the rejection message. The MS can determine from the information element whether the MS can release the connections made to a security gateway (“SEGW”) and to the GAN controller and whether it can release its WLAN connection facility. When the MS releases these connections, battery power is conserved while performing a timer decrement loop. At the end of the timer decrement loop, the MS makes another registration request. The network can reallocate resources when the MS releases the connections to the SEGW and the GAN controller. Methods for performing the GAN registration during network congestions are described.
