Red incident light is reflected on a mirror (19) and linearly polarized by a polarizer (26R). Linearly polarized incident light enters a transmissive liquid crystal device (11R), in which oblique incident light is changed into elliptically polarized light. A retardation compensator (27R) between the liquid crystal device (11R) and an analyzer (28R) has an inorganic form birefringence layer. The retardation compensator (27R) yields birefringence effect to change elliptical polarized light into linearly polarized light. An illumination apparatus includes a reflector including a parabolic or ellipsoidal mirror, a light source arranged near a (first) focal point of the reflector, and a front mirror having a transparent window and a mirror surface symmetrical about the light axis. Luminous flux emitted from the light source is reflected from the reflector. In the case of the parabolic mirror, the front mirror has the same size as an entrance of an output light utilizing optical system, and the luminous flux exits toward the optical system as collimated light. The liquid crystal display apparatus includes: a first sealing member 15 arranged at an outer periphery of a liquid crystal layer 17 sandwiched between a pair of substrates 11 and 12; and a second sealing member 16 arranged at an outer periphery of the first sealing member 15 in contact with the pair of substrates 11 and 12. In order to perform high efficient cooling without boiling cooling liquid and to improve maintainability such as replacement of a lamp, the present invention provides a liquid crystal projector including a light source lamp, a liquid crystal panel, a power source, a fan for removing heat generated by the power source and the lamp, a water-cooling jacket provided on an inner surface of an external wall portion opposed to the lamp in the liquid crystal projector, a metal pipe arrangement for radiation which is placed in the external wall portion, and a pump for driving cooling liquid to flow in the water-cooling jacket so that the cooling liquid receiving the heat from the lamp circulates in a circulation path through the water-cooling jacket, the metal pipe arrangement, and the pump to emit the heat to the outside through the metal pipe arrangement.

A liquid crystal projector device of the present invention includes a casing having disposed therein a lamp unit, an optical system for receiving light from the lamp unit to generate image light, and a power unit. An exhaust system for cooling an inside of the casing is attached to a side surface of the casing. The exhaust system includes a first exhaust fan and a second exhaust fan, which stand along the side surface of the casing. The first exhaust fan is placed toward the lamp unit, while the second exhaust fan is placed toward the power unit. Exhaust directions of both exhaust fans intersect each other.

In a three-plate-type liquid crystal projector, there may be differences in the temperatures generated in each of three liquid crystal panels since the energy of light irradiated to the liquid crystal panels varies by each color. Due to the differences in the temperatures, there generates differences in the response speeds of liquid crystal molecules, which causes contours to be seen with blur tails when a moving picture is displayed. This can be overcome by the present invention in which correction amount performed on video signals supplied to three liquid crystal panels is changed by each of the three liquid crystal panels according to temperatures, when it is determined that a detected temperature has reached a prescribed value through detecting the temperature of at least one of the three liquid crystal panels, or the peripheral temperature of at least one of the three liquid crystal panels, or the temperature of a prescribed part of a liquid crystal projector.

The invention is to develop a color polarizing plate with a support, the polarizing plate having both good brightness and polarizing efficiency for a blue channel (for blue light). The color polarizing plate with a support for a liquid crystal projector comprises a polarizing plate containing a stilbene type water-soluble azo dye as a dichroic molecule and a support, wherein the polarizing plate has an average single transmittance of 39% or more and an average crossed transmittance of 0.4% or less at 420 to 500 nm and an average crossed transmittance of 4% or more at 50 to 780 nm.

Three retardation compensators are provided for compensating the retardation of liquid crystal devices for red, green and blue light, respectively. Each of the retardation compensators is composed of plural high and low refractive index thin film layers alternately layered on a substrate. Because of the difference in the wavelength dependences of the liquid crystal device and the retardation compensator, the retardation R2 of the retardation compensator becomes much larger than the retardation R1 of the liquid crystal device in short wavelength region of the visible band. In order to match the retardation, the thickness of the retardation compensator for blue light is smaller than those for red and green light.

This invention relates to a polyvinyl alcohol type polarizing film or plate which comprises a water-soluble dye having the formula (1) in a free acid form or a copper complex salt thereof. The said polarizing plate has excellent polarizing performance capability and durability, and is suitably used for the green channel of a liquid crystal projector when B in formula (1) is a benzoylamino group and the water-soluble dye has a wave length for maximum absorption (λmax) of 520 nm or more and less than 580 nm.

The present invention is a liquid crystal projector device using a liquid crystal panel. The device mounts a liquid crystal panel (16) on a light incident plane of a polyhedral dichroic prism (23) in a bonded state so as to integrate the panel with the prism, and comprises a heat sink (29) and a heat pipe (31) which forcedly cools the integrated structure statically. A doughnut-shaped dust-proof plate is externally fitted in the body of the projection lens. The dust-proof plate comprises a first member which is flexible like rubber and a second member made of plastic which is uneasy to deform. The second member is made lower in a vertical direction (lengthwise) than the first member, thereby making it possible to allow deformation at an upper end and a lower end of the first member. On the other hand, the second member is made long in a horizontal direction (crosswise). A longitudinal portion of the second member is set to have such a length that it can come into contact with a lower wall of the frame of the liquid crystal projector even if the projection lens is positioned at the uppermost position and can come into contact with an upper wall of the frame even if the projection lens is positioned at the lowermost position in a state where the dust-proof plate is obliquely turned. Therefore, the dust-proof plate is prevented from being turned at an angle of 90 degrees.

A light-polarizing film is provided which possesses a light transmittance of not more than 0.3% at wavelengths of from 430 nm to 500 nm inclusive when irradiated with a linearly polarized light with a vibration plane parallel to an absorption axis of said film, and a light transmittance of not less than 77% at wavelengths of from 430 nm to 500 nm inclusive when irradiated with a linearly polarized light with a vibration plane perpendicular to the absorption axis of said film. When a light-polarizing plate comprising the light-polarizing film is applied to the liquid crystal panel for blue of a liquid crystal projector, the obtained liquid crystal projector displays images featuring bright and natural color tones.

A form birefringence to compensate the phase retardation caused by a liquid crystal device has a retardation compensation film that is composed of alternately deposited high and low refractive index layers. The retardation compensation film is provided in at least one of the incident side and the emanation side of the liquid crystal device. The birefringence value Δn and the total thickness d of the retardation compensation film are adjusted such that the retardation of the retardation compensation film agrees with the retardation of the liquid crystal device at least at one wavelength in the visible band.

A retardation compensation element (56) is composed of a C-plate (86) and an O-plate (85). The O-plate (85) is a biaxial birefringent medium made of an obliquely deposited organic material, and has a fast axis (L6) parallel to the orthographic projection of a deposition direction (96) onto the surface of the O-plate (85).
