An apparatus and method to synchronize devices in a network to a sub-millisecond timing accuracy. In a first embodiment, the transmission of data is synchronized between a first source device and destination devices communicatively coupled to a network. In a second embodiment, data is deterministically transmitted between a first source device and destination devices communicatively coupled to a network. In a third embodiment, a deterministic network synchronizes the transmission of data between a first source device and destination devices coupled to a network.

Several audio signal processing techniques may be used in various combinations to improve the quality of audio represented by an information stream formed by splice editing two or more other information streams. The techniques are particularly useful in applications that bundle audio information with video information. In one technique, gain-control words conveyed with the audio information stream are used to interpolate playback sound levels across a splice. The apparatus includes an image capture unit that is configured to capture one or more image frames. Also provided is a sound capture unit. The sound capture unit is configured to identify one or more sound sources. The sound capture unit generates data capable of being analyzed to determine a zone of focus, at which to process sound to the substantial exclusion of sounds outside of the zone of focus. The method includes: displaying video on a screen that corresponds to an audio signal including a high frequency component having a predetermined pattern inserted therein to indicate when a scene change occurs in a video signal, detecting a scene change in the displayed video and detecting the high frequency component having the predetermined pattern in the audio signal, calculating a time difference between a time when the scene change is detected in the displayed video and a time when the high frequency component having the predetermined pattern is detected in the audio signal, and controlling delay times of the audio signal and the video signal according to the calculated time difference.
