A push-to-talk (“PTT”) group call system, for use as, e.g., a public safety wireless network, includes a CDMA-based 1x-EVDO radio access network operably connected to a PTT server over an IP network. The radio access network includes base stations for radio communications with a number of distributed mobile stations. In carrying out wireless communications, the group call system combines IP-based voice and other real-time multimedia services with the 1x-EVDO radio access network's Broadcast Multicast Service. This allows a number of users to receive the same copy of an IP-based media stream for point-to-multipoint, group transmissions. A method for delaying network reselection by a wireless communication device following a call failure is provided. The method can include determining an initiation of a voice call while connected to a first network. The method can further include participating in a circuit switched fallback (CSFB) procedure to transition from the first network to a second network in response to initiation of the voice call. The method can additionally include determining an occurrence of a call failure of the voice call. The method can also include, responsive to the call failure, barring reselection to the first network for a threshold barring period.

The method of compressing a text message for transmission may include parsing text strings and encoding numerical values with a binary representation and analyzing values of the text strings and populating a session specific codebook with partial strings from the values. The method of compressing a message for transmission may also include parsing the message with a template and generating at least one substring to be transmitted; parsing the at least one substring with entries in a session specific codebook and generating a first part of the compressed message; populating the session specific codebook with entries for unknown field values; parsing any unmatched substrings with entries from a first static dictionary and generating a second part of the compressed message; parsing any still unmatched substrings with entries from a second static dictionary and generating a third part of the compressed message; compressing a remainder of the substrings with a compression algorithm; and combining the first part, the second part, and the third part of the compressed message to obtain a compressed message for transmission.

A PTT system performs session setup with the AT, allocates information including a multicast IP allocated to the group of the AT during the session setup, and after the session setup, provides the PTT service between the ATs in the group using a routing protocol for the multicast IP in the IP network. Each router configures a multicast tree of the group, and upon receiving transmission data from the AT, transmits the data to the ATs in the group according to the multicast tree.
